I think it's about time for CBS Paramount to ...

I think it's about time for CBS Paramount to give us a new Star Trek series. One with lots of Borg, Klingons, Romulins, etc., also lots of holodeck adventures. Here's an idea, series sponsors could have their businesses revealed on the holodeck. Imagine Star Trek characters on the holodeck at a McDonald's hamburger stand!

What does anybody else think about this? I remember old black and white tv series' from the 1950's would show the characters in a tv show using the sponsor's product, like Chesterfield Cigarettes. A character would pull out a pack of Chesterfield Cigarettes and you could clearly see the name on the cigarette pack when the character pulls it out of his pocket. Imagine a holodeck character going into an Olive Garden or another well-known restaurant in a 21st century holographic simulation. What does anybody else think about this idea?

First, welcome to the board.

Second, this is not the correct forum for this thread. Moving to Future of Trek.

My advice is always the same...take some time to look around, read the FAQ, get a feel for the place. Learn the ropes, so to speak...

No.

And Fred Flintstone used to do a sales pitch for Winstons.

I think anyone who can't spell Romulans probably shouldn't be pitching for a series that would feature them.

And that's pretty much the nicest response I have to the OP.

1st Starfleet Officer: Hey! We're in Space in the 24th century! What do we do now?!?

2nd Starfleet Officer: Ha! Space is boring! The 24th Century is boring! Let's got to the Holodeck and go back to the 21st century!

I'll pass.

Referencing Julie Newmar's pronunciation, I think you meant 'klingin.'

If this does happen I'm certainly hoping for some Vulcanians, Bajora and Gem-haters.

[...SNIP!]
What does anybody else think about this idea?
If Product Placement belongs anywhere on STAR TREK, it is in the Holodeck. In fact, I suspect ALL of the spinoffs would've benefitted from having that. Unfortunately, Product Placement would have to wait until STAR TREK (2009). I suspect this idea would've done much to make The Next Generation even more commercially acceptable than it was, at the time. And anything which benefits TNG is worth it, just for that ...

Instead of ordering "Tea, Earl Grey, hot," Picard could have ordered "Schwepps Bitter Lemon, iced."

But nothing is going to date a show more than product placement, especially if it's for a company or product that no longer exists.

Didn't that Admiral (or Captain?) in ST: Enterprise refer to the Klingon in the medical ward as a "Klingot?"

At least someone was paying attention.

In other words, more of the same old shit we've had for the last twenty years?

McDonald's doesn't need to advertize that badly; they're doing just fine by themselves.

I think you just came out of Marketing 101.

Re: I think it's about time for CBS Paramount to ...

Back in the 50s and 60s, as OP so fondly remembers, and companies actually sponsored production of shows instead of just buying ad time through networks, stars would actually film commercials in character.

So you might see Clark Kent and Jimmy Olsen having breakfast together with Kellogg's Corn Flakes on the table while they talk about how great it is. It was okay for Clark and Jimmy to have breakfast together, but Lois wasn't allowed in those.

Or Andy Taylor and Opie chatting about Post Toasties, Lucy and Ricky Ricardo plugging Philip Morris cigarettes. Even the Cartwrights would ride up and tell you all about the new Chevrolets in a 10 minute plug every season when the new models came out.

I'm pretty sure the OP is being facetious.

On the off chance he isn't. No to product placement. And no for the borg. After TNG, we didn't need to see them again. I find them an unsympathetic antagonist, which is not at all interesting to me. And a TV narrative isn't the medium for portraying a wholly sadistic and terrifying villain, so again, it doesn't interest me to have the borg. Unless HBO picks up Star Trek.

Getting to know the Romulans - politically and socially- does however interest me.
