Re: Star Trek TNG Reboot coming?

TNG won't get a reboot because, despite anything else, at it's core Star Trek is based off of the Original Series. Hence why if there was a reboot, it would always be based off the Original Series, just as it was. TNG is a sequel series. It and the entire franchise exists in terms of the original. To do a remake is awkward and too abstract in narrative terms.

This.

I hope they don't try to redo TNG, if for no other reason than to avoid the hardcore fan backlash when it isn't what they wanted it to be. And make no mistake, it wouldn't be.

What I'm already seeing in this thread would make TNG into Star Trek: The Love Boat.

Re: Star Trek TNG Reboot coming?

If we're going to bring in narrative structure, for the most part the TNG we had works perfectly fine as a TOS reboot.

It's obvious, but the only reason TNG would be rebooted is if it had the potential to be successful. The most natural way for it to be successful would be for its crew to be interesting. A diverse crew not derivative of the TOS crew and displaying sophisticated relationships might be one way it could accomplish that.

nuBSG was highly successful despite the vocal objections of the hardcore fanbase of the original. The next Trek series needs a larger audience than existing hardcore fans to be successful. It's doubtful that all the existing fans would dislike it anyway, although if experience is any guide some vocal minority will hate it, no matter what.

TNG's primary strength -- conspicuously wasted on the big screen -- was character development and relationships. (Better female characters wouldn't go amiss in another attempt, though...)

So... just like everything ever since TOS season 3 in 1969.
