The thing worth pointing out is that the Phillies are actually over-performing as well. They're among the healthiest teams in Baseball (no real position player has missed any time and only Cole Hamels has been injured). Considering their average age is 193, they're due for injuries. Also, Chase Utley and Carlos Ruiz are hitting well and Jimmy Rollins is at least having some power.

I heard that the only way Amaro would be fired is if the Phillies were both healthy and in last place. Well, here's that chance.
Well the Philly media has been running hit pieces on Utley for the last few weeks, so I don't know how much longer he'll be in town...

Re: 2014 MLB Season: How Many Pitchers Will Die For Our Sins?

I only got to listen one day while I was briefly in town, but I didn't hear anyone complaining about Utley (doesn't mean it doesn't happen, just it didn't happen when I was listening to the radio). I also don't see anything in the print media at a quick glance. He was the only one who was willing to talk after a recent god-awful performance, so maybe he got some backlash because he was only one to snap back at (when asked if he thinks the Phillies might really just be this bad, he said that he likes to be optimistic, so no). You could be right, but I think people recognize that Utley's playing quite well.

On the other hand, he should not have gotten that contract extension and what he does doesn't really help in the long run. He's one of my favorite Phillies of all time, but hanging on to our World Series core is mostly pointless at this time except because there's no one to replace them with, but their current salaries aren't really justified.

Welcome Gregory Polanco!

Link

I wondered if this might happen when he wasn't in the Indianapolis Indians' lineup this evening. Too bad it took an appendectomy to make it happen, but it's great that Polanco's getting his chance.

I don't think you can embed videos other than the ones on youtube, but Yoenis Cespedes made one of the most insane plays I've seen in a long time last night. You want to talk about a guy with a cannon go search for his throw throwing out the runner at home in last night's game. It was incredible.

Holy shit, Cespedes!

I'd love to see the A's manage to hold on to him long-term, but I get the feeling he's bound for the Bronx eventually.

He needs to fix his problem of swinging at everything, including pitches that are a mile out in the San Francisco Bay.

This. Very free swinging, and therefore is wildly inconsistent offensively. Doesn't mean the Yanks or the Red Sox won't overpay for him, but he does have some flaws that need to be fixed for him to be a true superstar.

T-A-N-A-K-A holsters another win. Another 11 K's and 8 innings pitched.

11 wins thus far.

Great catch Ellsbury to rob Cano of a HR and end the 5th. One of the best I've seen all season.
