I really don't get the obsession people have with hairpieces, especially on actors. I don't see it as any different than makeup. It's a tool they use to uphold an image. What's the big deal?
For a lot, nay most people, it's his steadfast refusal to admit what is so obvious that is the source of obsession and frustration.

. . . If he'd admit it? It would get some attention for a week or two for the simple fact he's refused to do so for 50 years, and then... no one would care.

Since he won't? People joke about it and poke at it and such, because it's so freaking silly of him to deny it.
In Shatner's case, it's all part of the joke. Everyone knows he wears a hairpiece. He knows that everyone knows. We know that he knows that everyone knows. It's just Shatner being Shatner.
Right on the money.

He might have been a vanity thing when he was young, but who among us isn't guilty of the same thing?

As for Gates McFadden, I assumed she wore the wig in the first season when her onscreen hair looked thicker and redder. When her hair looked more strawberry blonde and was finer in texture I figured it was her own.

And I'm pretty sure the Nathan Fillion toupee thing is just a joke.

If threads like this keep popping up, Kirk's hair is likely to be the villian in the next Star Trek Movie

Don't go giving them any ideas.

But here's one: In the opening scene of next movie, the Enterprise encounters a spatial anomaly and receive strange transmissions from another Enterprise, something about an energy ribbon and deflector control. Spock devises a solution and transmits through the anomaly. The Enterprise B implements the solution from the bridge and is not damaged by the ribbon. The anomaly disappears and our heroes continue on into the opening credits ...

Talking about hair.
From the new book about TOS Season 2, it says that GR was the one who had 'Kirk' shave off his chest hair. I always thought it was Shatner.

It was a budget cutting measure, they used the chest hair to populate the wig.
