wh doesnt the original series get the respect it deserves?

Okay so it seems like a lot of people these days just don't regard the original series that highly. With the exception of the 3rd season(which in it there are still episodes which are worth watching) the original series is my favorite star trek show and maybe even my favorite sci fi show.

This is because there's a certain charm to this that was never replicated by any of the other shows(this is also helped by the fact the show never took itself too serious like tng), also the pacing and music are not bad, and despite what many believe the acting isn't bad. In fact spock and McCoy are played by amazing actors are some of the best characters in sci fi.

another criticism I often here is its too old and cheesy but if any ones learned any thing from watching the twilight zone is age doesn't equal quality. there are some cheesy moments but again with the exception of the 3rd season this isn't too bad and in some cases helps the humor and charm of the show.

the high point of the show is the writing and the character interaction which are both great. also most people regard the next generation higher but compared to tos its rewatch value is considerably lower due to it not having aged as good as tos. another thing I often hear is many people watch the original series movies and skip tos for the reasons above. but despite the tos movies mostly being great they are much better if you watch tos first.

Lastly most just say that tos is only good for nostalgia and are to boring for younger audience but this is untrue because I first started watching them 2 years ago at the age of 14 and compared to other trek shows it has the most action and seasons 1 and 2 have some of the best episodes in all of sci fi which definitely out way the few bad filler episodes. if I missed anything or have an thing to add please reply below.

Is this topic all that different than this one?

^ I was just going to link to that thread.

To tmosler, what I said in that thread is pretty much what I would say in this one.

Granted, the two threads are similar in intent, but there is one critical difference I see. This thread's OP is a thoughtful, see-it-for-what-it-is sixteen year old who hasn't been tainted by modern conventional wisdom. Kinda gives me hope for the future to see this. So in that sense, tmosler is kind of a Star Trek unto himself!

I'm glad to see it!

Frankly, everyone's taste in films and tv shows is different (yes, ''shocker'', I know...). I have very eclectic tastes, I can watch original Star Trek, 80's mindless action films, 70s blaxploitation, Hitchcock films, 40s serials, Maltese Falcon and on and on....

I know some people who have absolutely no patience for Entertainment produced before they were born, and when you're 20 years old that cuts out a lot of what I consider amazing material...

Someone whose idea of comedy is limited to Dave Chapelle would probably balk at being told to listen to the Marx Brothers or even Bill Cosby. Prime Eddie Murphy would likely get a shot though its total lack of PC would probably shock as well.

I find those who actually appreciate original Trek are more open-minded historically-speaking. Trendoids who only follow what is current whether music or films will never give it a chance, that's just how it is.

Tmosler, glad you appreciate TOS, but its pacing and music is actually EXCELLENT. Musical scores for television blossomed in the 60s and 70s, but sadly waned in the latter half of the 80s until it is sadly an almost-dead art form. When John Williams passes away truly great Hollywood scoring will be a thing of the past.

And the acting in TOS was also more than just ''not bad''. TOS actually made Nimoy as an Emmy-nominated actor, TNG has nada in that category...

Don't worry about TOS not receiving enough respect. It got more than enough, and is still going strong as it enters its fiftieth year. Michael Bay films might be the cool thing as far as the ADD-kids go, but they'll be mostly forgotten in 20 years...

Good question in the OP. I think, personally, that it's mostly because of younger viewers who are unable or unwilling to look past the limitations of the rra in whcih it was produced. To my eyes, TOS is still THE Trek and I will never truly understand why TNG is seemingly so much more popular than TOS.

If you were a Star Trek fan in the '70s you learned to ignore the disrespect. You learned to tune out the naysayers. I think TOS is well respected among its fans and other people in fields of science, technology, many science fiction writers and even many involved in film and television.

Tom Hanks, President Obama, Doug Drexler, Michio Kaku, Robert Sawyer, Isaac Asimov---that's a good start in terms of being in good company who respect the TOS.

I don't believe that's necessarily the case. In popular culture, TOS is still at far deeper level of penetration than TNG will ever achieve. If anything, TNG is on a backward slide from that perspective IMHO.

Superlative reply. And what you call eclectic tastes, I call normal.

This. TNG *is* fondly remembered in it's own right, but ask any member of the public about Star Trek, and it'll be the TOS characters who they first associate with the franchise. And not just because of the nuTrek movies: it's been that way for a long time.

The under-respected Star Trek's are DS9, VOY and ENT.
