Here's what could be considered quick primer for the movie, a short award winning film on mind uploading:

I want a movie where a human downloads his brainwaves, controls a 3D printer then prints themselves a new body.

You know, I'm actually looking forward to the movie as an interesting looking scifi movie, and not as a promotional vehicle for your techno-religious dogma as you've made it out to be. Be careful you don't poison the well for people and make them dislike the movie or root against its success because they dislike the way you've hijacked it and made it out to be like a sign from Digital Jesus.

I am just sick of the anti-tech nonsense.

Giving society cheap, abundant energy … would be the equivalent of giving an idiot child a machine gun.

I'll be missing this movie.

It's hard to tell for sure, but based on the trailer, it looks like Johnny Depp basically does exactly that in this.

I hope, it looks really weird though. I like when sci-fi actually does sci-fi decently. Last time I remember that was 'Moon'. I want a "download your dying brainwaves into new body" movie that feels more real than this looks.

It looked to me like his new body may have been made up of a swarm of nanites that mimic his physical form.

I get the feeling that the movie shares a lot in common with Michael Chrichton's novel Prey, especially toward the end when they're fighting the nanite swarms in the desert.

^I actually had the same thought when they were showing those clouds of nanites or whatever they are. I enjoyed Prey, so there could be worse things for it to be like.

I'm not remotely religious, and dogma suggests an unchanging and unthinking set of rules as well as a known quantity of events...which is the exact opposite of what I'm saying, so you're wrong on both counts.

As for the movie...well, early reviews appear to suggest it is even more 2-dimensional than I would have thought, but I am still going to see it tomorrow.

As they say, bad publicity is better than no publicity.

So far: 7.0 rating from 1091 votes on IMDB.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2209764/

Reviews: 57, 49 rotten.

https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/transcendence_2014/

In his directorial debut, ace cinematographer Wally Pfister remains a distinctive visual stylist, but Transcendence's thought-provoking themes exceed the movie's narrative grasp.

I'm not too excited about this film. First it looks to modern. We are nowhere near uploading a person's consciousness in to the "cloud". Second it seem formulaic. Scientist uploads brain in to the internet and gets God Complex. Plucky girlfriend and some outsider who are the only ones to notice the problem race to stop him. After some eye rolling technobable, scientist dies and has a sweet moment of regret with said girlfriend. Third I hate the meme that is the "singularity". I hope our AI overlords kill us out of pity.
