I wouldn't mind if Gary came back and channeled his inner J.R.. It would give the character something to do.

Didn't Bobby say at the graveyard that he was the only one left? Gary must have died over the haitus.

Re: DALLAS: Season 3 Discussion Thread (Spoilers)

I think it was fairly obvious that he meant "the only one left at Southfork," (of the original family.)

Jock, Miss Ellie, and J.R. are dead. Clayton is dead. (And as cardinal biggles asked me earlier, where exactly is he buried? He sold the Southern Cross, so its unlikely he'd be there. Maybe he was cremated?) Pam is dead. April is dead. (And in the case of the latter, she's not been mentioned a single time since the revival began.)

We even see Aaron Southworth, Miss Ellie's father's grave. We can assume his son (Miss Ellie's brother) Garrison is dead by now, as would be Jason Ewing and as we know from the old show, his daughter Jamie is as well.

Everyone else who would be eligible or possibly eligible to be buried on Southfork is still alive. Ray, Gary, Jenna, Charlie, Lucas, Donna, Margaret, Lucy, James, Valene, Mitch, Michelle, Cally, her unnamed son by J.R., Debra-Lynn, her son with James, and Jack are all, presumeably, still "out there" in the Dallas universe.

The point is that of the (blood) members of the family from the original show, Bobby is the last one alive and living at Southfork. That's why the plotline/jokes with John Ross about "remodeling" carried some extra weight. Bobby is representing the middleground between the original show and the new. John Ross is baptized in this episode, given his father's belt buckle and watch, and is already wheeling and dealing to make trouble.

This coincided, beautifully, I thought, with Elena's first steps toward becoming the Ewings' new antagonist (if not outright enemy and villain of the show). Hers is a storyline I'm quite interested in watching unfold.

I predict we'll find out Cliff had those deeds faked to make it look like J.R. screwed Elena's father.

A double double-cross. Even J.R. would tip his hat to Cliff Barnes for pulling that off.

There is literally NOTHING --in either series-- to support that claim. If anything, Bobby was the one who always welcomed Gary back whenever he visted Southfork, as opposed to J.R., who did everything he could to drive Gary away.

Well I was kidding. Like Bobby was channeling his inner J.R. a little too much.

Or... placating JR's perspective (to avoid him rolling in his own grave?)

I'm off to check out the whole premiere, only watched the first 10 mins so far.
My feeling for the longevity of the series is that the John Ross character will be central to the show's success. So far, so good.

Indeed. A coke-snortin' body-servin' mama. I didn't know she had it in her. She's clearly demonstrating how great an addition to the cast she is.

And Ryland is a secret agent man? Did everybody else's mind explode too?

I guess we know who the boss is in that relationship.

A little bit. I'm not convinced though. If I were Bobby and Ann, it would take a whole lot more than some random kid in a suit flashing an ID to convince me Ryland wasn't lying his ass off, given how nasty he's been with the Ewings.

Re: DALLAS: Season 3 Discussion Thread (Spoilers)

Random aside:

This article from December, interviewing executive producers Cynthia Cidre and Michael Robin, has a couple of interesting (and fair warning, SPOILER-Y) tidbits about the new season. I'll put them behind the cut:
