But it's funny how consoles have changed games. It's virtually impossible to play a proper FPS on a console, for example, which is why they "dumbed" the mechanics down pretty much. The difference in gameplay between Crysis and Crysis 2 was staggering.

I think as consoles become more powerful, we're going to see less and less of that, as most of it comes down to memory constraints. While consoles certainly aren't the preferable way to play FPSes, I do think that they have improved loads over time, and I think this coming gen will see less of a difference between the two.

I played Deus Ex: HR on the PS3, and that I felt it was a well-designed game given the constraints with good compromise, and I didn't for a moment miss my mouse and keyboard. That's because the limitations were well-thought out, and the controls appropriately designed.

I suppose PCs do owe a bit of a debt to consoles. I find a lot of games are very enjoyable on the PC with an Xbox 360 controller. A game like Dark Souls isn't really playable any other way (although that's less a limitation of the mouse/keyboard combo and more an indictment of DS' absolutely awful implementation.)
Definitely.

Both sides of the hardware spectrum (now that there are only two, with Arcades having gone the way of the dodo) owe each other all kinds of debts, having influenced each other for decades.

As a serious gamer, limiting yourself to one platform for what are basically crazy ideological reasons (I'm not talking about financial/budgetary concerns, that's completely different) is FUCKING STUPID.

I should clarify that when I say "serious" gamer, I'm not talking play-for-money, e-sports style serious. What I mean is "dedicated". With a certain love for the medium.
I tend to shy away from consoles, not for lack of money, but because I'd just rather spend my money elsewhere. I don't have an HD TV in my living room. The kids use the TV in there for playing the Wii. My big TV is in my bedroom, where it's hooked up to my PC. While I could get an Xbox or PlayStation, my room is cluttered enough, I don't want to pay console game prices, and virtually all the good games end up on PC eventually. So, my preference is just to invest that money in my desktop and buy more games.

I don't hate consoles or anything, they're just devices that fill a niche in my life that I've already got covered. My desktop is for gaming, productivity, and media--it does all of them just fine.

Thanks, Spctre! I love gaming and I just prefer gaming on a PC. So if you really want to pass judgement there and call people "FUCKING STUPID" (do you also talk in caps?) then feel free to do that.

I actually do own a PS3 but there's hardly anything I'd like to play on it. We've only had it for about a year now (my first console ever) and we use it to play PS Move when friends are over. For everything else I simple prefer the PC and mouse/keyboard input. This might be game genre related, too because most games I enjoy work better this way than with a controller. I own a gamepad for the PC, too, though.

Anyway, I'll be off now and feel "FUCKING STUPID" a little more.
And next time I play Final Fantasy 14 (on a PC) and I'm in a group with a guy who's actually trying to play an MMO on a PS3 I'll remember to not yell at the person for playing like shit because consoles just aren't made for MMOs.

ETA: I also think it sucks how console gaming has affected PC gaming. The fact that FPS gaming has gotten easier because it needs to cater towards people who use a silly controller now has been mentioned before. But it's also the fact that the evolution of game graphics has been slowed down severely by the shitty performance of consoles. Devs having to take sales for old hardware (like the PS3) into account when making their games has made sure that graphics quality hasn't progressed as much as it could have.

Seems a little strange to get bent out of shape by that comment when it's a response to your insinuation that console players aren't "real" gamers.

They aren't?

The whole original point of consoles was to make video games more accessible to families--that is children and non tech-savvy adults.

While the market has grown immensely in the last 35 years, that core target audience still hasn't changed.

Consoles are, however, the primary reason the whole "dumbing down" of video games fad even exists.

I myself haven't owned a console in nearly a decade since, and it seems like, with each new generation, I want to stay farther and farther away from them. Really, just about every modern console game I've ever tried in the last couple of years has been total shit.

I'm pretty sure he was talking about the console warriors and glorious PC master race types. If you have no particular interest in console gaming, fair enough, it's not your kind of thing. But there are PC gamers who don't get the differences between the two formats and act smugly superior just because they play games on PC, and they are as obnoxious and stupid as the Xbox and PS fanboys.

Not really. That has much more to do with the crazy production costs of modern AAA games, with publishers forcing their developers to focus on "accessibility" rather than catering to niche audiences. If these companies would just stop focusing on trying to make games look nice and instead focused more on novel gameplay, they could make more diverse games with smaller teams. The rise of indie development will hopefully bring an end to that trend.

It seems kind of strange to me that there are still PC gamers who get down on console gamers as the scourge ruining the industry. There's a much better scapegoat, social media and smartphone gamers. And it's the trends and concepts from that portion of the industry that have been polluting gaming more than anything in my opinion.

My statement was not directed at you specifically. I was talking about limiting yourself for the wrong reasons (especially some sort of misguided "loyalty" for one hardware platform or another or otherwise ideological reasons).

Anyone who loves great video games doesn't care about what platform their on.

And again, budgetary concerns or other life factors are a totally different story obviously.

Indeed. Don't get me started on microtransactions in full-price, 60 dollar games and the free-to-play garbage on tablets and mobile devices a whole generation of kids is growing up on right now.

These poor, poor things with their uneducated parents

SPCTRE, the consistency of your arguments in this thread isn't exactly stellar.

First you claim that anybody who's limiting themselves to just one platform (like the PC) is "FUCKING STUPID".

And then next thing you write is that obviously shitty "garbage games for mobile devices" aren't real gaming and are driven by kids and their "uneducated parents".

So what is it? You really don't have any leg to stand on in this discussion anymore because you're showing a rather entertaining double standard and you're obviously not even aware of it.

People who actually do enjoy mobile games will claim that it's "FUCKING STUPID" to limit yourself to only pc and console gaming.
See the issue with your statement?

The bottom line is: Play whatever you like and if that means excluding one platform then that's not "FUCKING STUPID" but just a personal choice based on what games you like. I personally don't enjoy mobile games but that doesn't mean that they suck per se. It means that I don't like them.

Ah.. the age old war of PC vs. console gaming.

I do both depending on the game. I love strategy games and apart from some exceptions (the new UFO games) strategy games still work better on PCs.

For action games i prefer consoles because i can sink back into my comfortable couch and go nuts.

As there are fewer and fewer good strategy games (and my laptop is getting weaker by the months to play current titles in a decent quality) it's mainly consoles for me.

Control schemes tend to be well designed for consoles so i even play RPGs like Mass Effect on consoles, it works well enough and given the new generation of consoles the graphics are once again on the upper end (still can't beat a top of the line PC but then you'd need to invest 5-10x as much money).

So in the long run it'll be the PS4 for and hopefully 2014 will see a good wave of releases, the current state of available games is rather pitiful and uninteresting.

Re: Will you be getting a PS4 or an Xbox One ?

Fewer good strategy games?? I have to take issue with that. This is practically a golden age.

You have the various Paradox games: Europa Universalis, Crusader Kings, Hearts of Iron, etc. Civ V is still going strong. The Wargame series is great. The Fallen Enchantress games are good, along with King's Bounty. For space, you've got Sins of a Solar Empire (granted, a somewhat broken series with the latest installments), Distant Worlds (which is fucking amazing by the way), AI War, SPAZ, etc. Then there's the Total War games (Shogun 2 is good.) This is to say nothing of Starcraft 2, the Earth 2140/50/60 series, Darwinia, Supreme Commander, Tropico, the Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War games, XCOM: Enemy Unknown (which everyone who enjoys gaming should own, period), etc.

I'll grant that I don't know if you've played all those already, or if they are your cup of tea, but over the past several years there's been an amazing plethora of strong strategy games. I'm certainly not hurting for action in that genre.

Yeah, I completely agree with you. I can't improve upon your list of great modern strategy games, so I'll just add that today we also have the advantage of powerful processors that can handle more advanced AI and a larger scope. The upcoming Galactic Civilizations III is going to require a 64-bit OS, so our future grand strategy games are only going to become grander.

I think strategy games are much more suited to being on the PC. It's one of those things that just make sense in terms of controls, as being on consoles means there's a lot more travel time with your input.
