I'm still freaked out over the possibility of Kirk meeting Seven. Ten to one, she kicks him in the balls within 10 minutes.

And even if he tries to, say, put his arm around her or something, she'll cut it off and force-feed it back to him.

I like the concept of the character; I don't like the execution - pandering and condescending to the stereotypically horny, never kissed a girl, lives in his parent's basement furiously masturbating Trekkie.

That's not how it was executed at all. The concept was to sex it up (and no, not just for the stereotype you seem to have about trekkies) but the execution had very little actual sex, flirtation, innuendo. The execution, ie Ryan's performance, was a fully nuanced character struggling with classically Trek themes of what it means to be human.

Concept is human child, taken by the Borg, assimilated, is found, separated from the collective and slowly learns to be a human individual again.

The execution was "sex it up."

Re: Did You Like Seven Of Nine?

No the execution was not sex it up other than using an attractive actor and putting her in the catsuit, hardly a star trek first. The execution was to tell a story about how a freed Borg learns what it is to be human and what was positive about being Borg as well. Did you actually watch the show? Because other than a crass scene with Harry Kim there is no sexing anything up with this character, unless you view it that way simply because of her looks. Ryan plays her as the Spock/Data of VOY not as an Orion female.

The only thing wrong with the portrayal of Seven was her costume. Seven is the one ball on the show the writers didn't drop.

But, I do wish the screen time would have been more balanced.

Though I'm not necessarily a fan of hers, per se, I agree with everyone in support of Seven of Nine. Yes, her outfit sexed her up, but out in The World, we see well, not actual catsuits, but chicks wearing skin tight clothes, every day. They're not trying to be slutty, it's just the way they and their girlfriends dress. It might seem kind of contradictory, some way, but it's truth.

To be fair, if there was a hot guy on the show wearing a bodysuit that tight, there'd be plenty of talk about that too. I don't see it as sexist, but a reaction to the outfit and the obvious sex appeal. And yes, Jeri Ryan played the role straight drama, with all the integrity and depth you could ask from anyone in a catsuit.

I never really saw the over-the-top sexiness everyone ascribed to Seven/Ryan. Sure, she's in a catsuit, sure maybe the producers thought it would be sexy, but to be honest...it wasn't to me. She was so commanding a presense that I never paid attention to her clothes.

Re: Did You Like Seven Of Nine?

My closest friends at the time Voyager was one were a lot of straight guys, so maybe that colors my perception of how the public saw Seven. She was really popular, but the sex appeal was linked with the character and actress, at least with people I know. I was/am more interested in Tom Paris and Chakotay, so I'm just speaking of the public, and of friends, not personally.

I watched Voyager in a vacuum (and boy, was it cramped! *rimshot*) so I wasn't aware of the marketing. Maybe that why I didn't notice.

I also remember at the time I was living in Atlanta, and shortly after Seven joined the show the downtown area was heavily canvased with flyers promoting Seven, and they weren't emphasising her mind! The sex appeal was a big part of how they promoted Seven in print ads and commercials.
I think imgaining a male character in that same outfit is a good point though, how it is sexist that tptb put Seven, and later T'Pol in skintight catsuits, while you don't see the male characters dressed like that.

Absolutely. The only times I can remember skin-tight costumes for the men were when Q joined the Enterprise and wore a jumpsuit (not sure if it was meant to be tight, but it showed a LOT) and Julian's racquetball outfit.

Re: Did You Like Seven Of Nine?

Oh yes. Julian's raquetball outfit. I remember that
For what it's worth, in my ongoing TOS marathon, the head male android in I, Mudd wears a skintight sliver body suit that showed off a lot too. But it's worth noting these are just a handful of episodes we're pointing out where a man wears a bodysuit for a short time. It would be more comparable if say Julian spent most of his time on the show in skintight bodysuits rather than just a few minutes. When most people think of Seven, those catsuits are one of the first things that come to mind. It's pretty much one of the big iconic visuals of Voyager for the general public.

And she looked so much better in uniform.

It's just plain annoying that this fantastic character (my favorite) is inevitably associated with cat suits.
