Re: Are USA Doctor Who Blu Rays region-free?

The word is that there are some..... issues with these releases. A few reviews have popped up now giving the set only 1 star and saying the upscaling isn't great (the always dubious juddery-picture syndrome). Looks like maybe a cash-in release.

I understand that there might still be some improvement over the NTSC versions of the DVDs, if those are the ones you've got. But I think it might be best to leave this one alone for now (unless the price drops dramatically).

Re: Are USA Doctor Who Blu Rays region-free?

The website mightyape.com.au are listing the Australian releases of these BDs for individual sale, rather than as part of a boxset, commencing from December 5th 2013. If that's any indication for the rest of the world that individual releases are just around the corner (although UK and US individual release dates haven't actually been announced yet), then maybe there is still some hope for anyone who already has Series 5-7 and doesn't want to shell out for the big box and double-up.

I'm actually quite relieved that they aren't just a boxset exclusive, although possibly mightyape has let the cat out of the bag about the release date for individual releases before the Beeb actually wanted it to get out. I suspect they wanted to milk the 'exclusivity' of the boxset for as long as they could.

Crossed fingers that non-Australian regions get these individual releases too. It'd suck if a boxset was all there was.....

Re: Are USA Doctor Who Blu Rays region-free?

Just got my set; didn't care about sonic screwdrivers or any other tat so happy to pay less for the UK set but after half an hour of flipping back and forth between the original DVDs and the Blu-Rays I can't see any difference between the two, except the episodes are a couple of minutes longer because they're now at the wrong speed.

Here's two screenshots from 'Rose'. One's DVD, one's Blu-Ray. Can you tell which is which?

I was really referring to the lack of pictures in StCoop's post.

I don't see any pics in Firefox, and I'm not blocking anything.

Chrome shows me two image icons, but still no pictures.

^ You might need to manually copy the urls into another window (it worked for me ).

STCoop, If I was going to pick between 'coke' and 'pepsi', I'd say pepsi is the DVD and coke is the Blu Ray. Am I right?

As was I. Now there's a single picture, but. not, two pics, and no broken image

Even quoting the post in question, shows only evidence of 1 pic.

Re: Are USA Doctor Who Blu Rays region-free?

It seems the new US releases are still the definitive ones. There are a few things on them, like the reinstatement of the 'Next Time' trailers in Series 5 and the inclusion of the actual broadcast version of the 2005 children in need special rather than the workprint version that was mistakenly included on the DVDs, which have plagued all home releases until now -- including the current UK Blu Rays!

It's somewhat bizarre that Series 1-4 actually differ between UK and US. My assumption was both would be from the same source (blu rays being a mostly universal format, unlike DVD).

Chrome still shows 2 image icons/broken links. It can open them in new tab.

This postimg.org must be the problem, though I don't know how.

Looking at the images, it really is hard to see a difference.

YOu've also got to bear in mind when importing stuff to the UK from outside the EU, you can get hit for customs duty( and VAT I belive) so it might look cheaper and better value but it could end up being more expensive.
