Well apparently Hartnell wouldn't return Moffat's calls...
William Hartnell was dead even before The Five Doctors, in 1983. The role of the First Doctor was played by Richard Hurndall, and [i]he's[/ dead.
Of course, there are those who don't rate Hurndall's performance. I've seen it argued here and elsewhere that there's no point in having other actors play Doctors 1-3, that those roles are intrinsically linked to the original actors. I'm not necessarily in that camp myself (I'd like to see Sean Pertwee play his father's role) but I can see its merits. I suppose, for the sake of argument, while you're at it, why not cast Robert Carlyle or Sean Bean as Nine once Eccleston refused to return ?

See we know you're kidding now if you consider that Name of the Doctor had appearances by all of the Doctors.
Oh, lord. This is why I have a hard time taking fans seriously. Of COURSE it was appearances... wah, wah, wah, stock footage... but it was the Doctors as the appeared in the show, how much more nostalgic can you get?

Do you REALLY want to see Colin stuffed into a costume he hated? You really want to see Tom limping down a hallway, tripping over a scarf? THAT is how you want to celebrate Doctor Who's history, by rolling out old actors? It seems rather sad, and even a wee bit humiliating.

I just realized that in 2013, six different actors will play the role of the Doctor.
Matt Smith, David Tennant, John Hurt, David Bradley, Reece Shearsmith, and...who?

Of course, if you count the Big Finish audio plays, then you can add eight more.

Heh, it took me a minute or two to realize I wasn't counting him when I questioned the number to myself earlier

I guess Moffat wasn't exaggerating after all when he said we'll get more Doctor Who than ever before (verbatim).

Too true.

That can also apply to the returned episodes, too. With now 97 episodes missing, we now have more Doctor Who than ever (before).
