USS Victory, both in honor of HMS Victory and the fact there is no better name for a ship that takes part in combat.
I'll consider the name a kind of a jinx. Don't say it aloud, or it won't happen!
The French and Spanish at the Battle of Trafalgar would tend to disagree with you. Plus I think it would have an effect on opposing ships.

Science officer: New ship coming in the sector, it looks well armed. Name coming through as USS Victory.

Captain: Shit!

OTOH look how long HMS Invincible lasted at Jutland.

Others--guess the connection

USS New Richmond
USS Moore
USS Guin
USS Xenia
I want to say Ohio, because of Xenia, but I've never been to the state so it's just a guess. But the only town named Guin I can find is in Alabama.
They are the names of cities struck by strong violent tornadoes.

To wit

Captain Perry of the USS Rhoden (Gene) http://www.weatherpix.com/

USS Grazulis
USS Doswell
USS Marshall

all at Fujita base

I always wanted to see a Defiant-class starship named U.S.S. Warspite.

USS Sovereign. Lead ship of the Sovereign class. Named for the other British flagship present at the Battle of Trafalgar. The HMS Royal Sovereign.

Isn't that more an example of picking an existing name rather than coming up with your own starship name?

I think re-applying existing names has to count. After all, Enterprise was itself an inspired re-application of an existing name. (Although I get what you're saying -- there's already an "existing" Trek ship with that name.)

How would you like to be the Chief Engineer on board the USS Montgomery Scott. The name demands absolute perfection and innovation.

Being a (casual) Nebraska Cornhusker football fan, I thought of this:

USS Berringer.

Excelsior class, NCC-41796.

(I picked that number because it was the last full day Brook was alive: April 17, 1996.)

Or at least a flair for padding your repair-time estimates.

Speaking of real American warship names, I was researching some the other day and noticed not a few... intriguing and unexpected entries. For those who want authentic US Navy names for their ship in the finest Starfleet tradition, all of the following are available to you (occasional commentary offered in the spirit of good humour and the profoundest respect, of course, for the fine men and women of the US Navy):

L - O

Logic

USS Logic! I was just trying to think of how to pay tribute to Spock in a name... There it is
