I'm not sure the 10,000 lightyear thickness of the galaxy is entirely applicable here. Yes, the gas is about 10,000 lightyears thick, but the actual stars are only around 1000 lightyears thick. I think. I could be wrong. So depending on how big you think the Federation is and exactly where the Galactic barrier is, the UFP could very well extend all the way from top to bottom.

If not the UFP then certainly explored space. Rememer, in Enterprise the UFP was just being established.
The Enterprise DID have a second Five Year Mission between 2273 and 2278. Just use a little imagination.

Re: Location of the Delphic Expanse

I just rewatched season 3 of enterprise, and was looking at the star charts, I think I have a reasonable theory on the delphic expanse location.... it seems likely that both the Briar Patch and the Badlands are leftover chunks of the expanse... you can only screw with space for so long without do some kind of permanent damage, i'd think. so if we assume a sphere-ish shape, keeping Bynaus and Risa out of the expanse, we can safely assume the following star systems were in the expanse:

Gorn (we don't see them till season 4, in the mirror universe)
Part of TNG Tholian Space, but NOT Tholia
Sherman's Planet

and the following Nebulas/Anomalies make decent border markers:

Briar Patch
Plexion Nebula
Mutara Nebula

I have my version of the expanse outline in a JPEG of the Star Chart. anyone know how to post it?

A expanse is simply a large area with some kind of characteristic. Truthfully, I not sure what you're trying to say.

Something no one has mentioned, is that the expanse may be "above" or "below" us. The galactic plane is 10000 light years thick, so it could easily be above or below us, especially as star charts and stuff have placed stuff in all deirections in our plane, but hardly anything out of it.
There also the consideration that the expanse wasn't a permanent feature, it was growing in size, so working backwards there would have been a time in the history of this part of the galaxy when the expanse was tiny. It would have been possible to easily travel around it. The Cardassian poet could have gotten to Vulcan by traveling through what would one day be the expanse.

Prior to the construction of the first of the spheres there would have been no expanse at all.
