Re: Pre TOS star cruiser....

In school we used the expensive stuff, but obviously not wanting to fork out cash for that, I went with Blender. On the whole, not a bad program, but the controls were a bit annoying.

It's interesting how learning different programs or different versions of the same program (i.e. Illustrator) can make one want to go back and revisit earlier projects, isn't it?

Re: Pre TOS star cruiser....

My first project was my TAS scoutship design. I think it came out okay, but I know what things I struggled with and things I'm not wholly satisfied with. But knowing what I know now I find myself planning to revisit that design and build it again with what should be superior results.

Starting to detail the engineering and impulse section.

Re: Pre TOS star cruiser....

I must say part of the appeal for me is how it has a ring of familiarity and yet it remains different. I can envision this ship as being the first commands of Robert April and Christopher Pike before the Enterprise and her sisterships were built. It also manages to look less evolved than the TOS era yet without looking clunky.

Re: Pre TOS star cruiser....

If we assume the saucer rim to be roughly the same thickness as the Enterprise then it's clear this is a smaller ship. The saucer is smaller in diameter, the support hull is a bit smaller the dorsal is shorter and the nacelles aren't nearly as long.

Re: Pre TOS star cruiser....

I'm assuming a large combined engineering section for the impulse and warp drives in that unit, so the secondary hull is dedicated to labs and the hanger deck?

My keyboard is disintergrating at the moment, it's been causing some fun typos lately.

Re: Pre TOS star cruiser....

That one was a particularly good one. I'm sure the novelty of the disintegrating keyboard gets old fast when you're the one using it.

Re: Pre TOS star cruiser....

An idle moment. Here is a quick outline of my current thinking about the Independence-class. Instead of trying to reconcile a version of the Daedalus concept (which I could never be satisfied with) I've opted to try for something bridging between the Hercules-class star clipper and my current Discovery-class cruiser. The problem I have with the Daedalus idea is the mostly the sperical main hull. I find it an ugainly looking thing to tack on to the front of the ship and it always ends up looking clunky.

I've actually had something of this idea before, but now it's becoming more crystalized.

When will I get around to fleshing this out and modelling it? Good question because I have a number of other projects in mind all waiting to be tackled and some are non Trek.

Re: Pre TOS star cruiser....

That has a good profile to it.

There seems to be an indented line in your 3D model on the secondary hull. I realy like that. You think you might have that line slant downward as it moves toward the defelector dish, as a detachable section perhaps?

Re: Pre TOS star cruiser....

To the subject at hand and some more incremental detailing. I've added some detail to the secondary hull and the dorsal.

I like seeing different angles of the model to get a better feel for it and for what detail will add to and compliment the design. I have to say that I often do a bit of a double-take when I come back to the model because for a second I wonder where the nacelle support pylons are.
