When I drove manual years ago, I had a really hard time stopping/starting on hills without rolling backwards. Hard as I tried, I never learned to comfortably maneuver three pedals with two feet.
Did you try using the handbrake? That's what I do when I'm stopped on a slope. While keeping right foot on brake pedal, depress clutch with left foot and shift into gear. Apply handbrake, release brake pedal, then apply gas while releasing both clutch and handbrake. Just takes a bit of coordination.
Beat me to it. Though I would recommend not releasing the handbrake until you've reached the clutch biting point and you feel the car is ready to go forward, then you can release the handbrake and if you are on the biting point you don't need the brake as the car would remain stationary. Then it's just a case of applying more acceleration and releasing the clutch to move off.

But it's like any other skill you learn to do it, and in Europe you generally learn to drive in a manual so it becomes second nature.
I have no idea whether I used the handbrake -- we're talking about 40 years ago!

Yes, if I'd learned to drive manual first, it probably would've been easier for me. But I learned on my father's car, and he had a weak leg from polio, so he had to have an automatic, even when they were less common.

I used to love it. I like riding better, in that I can allow my mind to wander, to look outside and enjoy seeing the world pass by.

Re: How Do You Feel About Driving?

I love driving. I wanted to drive more than anything from the age when I knew what a car was. I used to make my own steering wheels out of paper plates and sit int he back seat behind my dad and mimic his moves. I got my license at 17 as soon as I could. I enjoy riding my motorcycle even more since it helps me avoid a lot of the traffic issues that plague a driver in a car. It's just those pesky other people on the road who can sometimes make the experience less than enjoyable.

I hate being the passenger on a car. My two options are either extreme motion sickness or falling asleep like a drooling baboon.

Riding on the back of motorbikes, on the other hand, is fun.

It's like the opposite of driving.

Same here. I get carsick on all but the straightest, smoothest freeway trips unless I'm doing the driving.

Having the right passenger on the back of a motorcycle can be even more fun.

Re: How Do You Feel About Driving?

I hate driving. However, I don't really fit into the poll options, because I don't take public transit even though it is available. I did take public transit for a few years to get to work and school, and I hated it. I highly value my privacy and personal space. But the biggest reason I hated it was the amount of time it took. A huge chunk of my day was just traveling back and forth between work and home on a bus. I couldn't take it anymore. I felt like it was sucking my life away from me.

Right now, I could drive to work in 15 minutes, or ride a bus that takes almost an hour...since my job allows me to afford my car, its not a difficult choice for me.

Also, I hated the idea of having to plan my life around bus schedules. My hours at work, what time I woke up in the morning, when I ate lunch and dinner, everything had to revolve around bus schedules. It was weighing me down.

So, even though I really don't enjoy driving at all, I consider it better than the alternative. I am a very independent person, so I NEED to know that I can get in my car and go wherever I want to at this very moment. I don't feel comfortable or at ease depending on a transportation system. It just brings me added anxiety, and I already have plenty of that!

Re: How Do You Feel About Driving?

Many years ago when I was at college and before I could drive. It took me 3 buses to get home or 2 hours (and the last one ran only every couple of hours. So I either had to wait or walk the last 3.25miles. Once I could drive it was more like 30mins, it was no contest.

I strongly dislike driving, and only do it when there's really no other way. It's a chore, it's annoying, and it's only very rarely quicker or more convenient than using my bicycle or public transport.

eta: an auto-driving car would only solve some of the problems I have with driving though.
