Re: Guy Ritchie To Direct 'The Man From U.N.C.L.E.' Starring Tom Cruis

From the description, it sounds like they're playing up the Cold War tensions that were barely mentioned in the original show. But the mention of their lead being a missing scientist's daughter suggests that they're sticking with the original formula of having an "innocent" in every episode.

I expected that Hugh Grant would end up playing Mr. Waverly. He seems a bit young for the part, but has the right kind of slightly dotty upper-class Britishness.

looking forward to it. though, i would have liked if Robert Vaughn could have played Mr. Waverly. hopefully he and David McCallum get a cameo or something.

^^ I hope so, too.

So it's set in the early 60s and Cruise is out. Great news on both fronts. I hope they plan to go for the right tone.

Sounds very promising. I'd have liked to see either Vaughn or McCallum as Waverly and maybe if this had been done ten/fifteen years ago that would have been likely but they are both, sadly, getting on a bit now. I do hope we get a cameo.

Grant seems young, but he is 52 now so he's two decades+ older than Solo and Kuryakin! When we have an M only 5 years older than 007 that doesn't seem so outrageous!

And my old nemesis Jared Harris as well...

Looking good...

Leo G. Carroll was 72 when he debuted as Waverly. Robert Vaughn is currently 80 and David McCallum is 79. So they're both around the right age -- certainly closer to it than Hugh Grant is. I wouldn't mind seeing McCallum in the role.

Then again, I suppose the studio is thinking franchise, so they want a Waverly that's likely to be around for a few sequels.

Probably. I think McCallum still seems in quite good shape judging by NCIS, but when Hustle was still on Vaughn seemed kinda frail now

I hope both are in the film in some (respectful) way

The best suggestion for casting came from: Joseph Dickerson
http://www.josephdickerson.com/photos/about/

He once suggested that Solo be played by Kyle MacLachlan and that Illya be played by Sting.

I never could get that suggestion out of my head. Or this film:

^McLachlan's Agent Cooper in Twin Peaks always seemed inspired by Solo to me.

Hmm, I can't really see that. As I remember Cooper, the main quality I'd ascribe to him is that he was earnest. He was quirky, but very earnest and sincere and a total Boy Scout. Napoleon Solo was rarely earnest. Vaughn went through the whole series with a wry, impish attitude of being in on the joke and above it all, as though he were just making a game of everything. And he was anything but a Boy Scout; he was as much a womanizer and killer as James Bond, but much more playful and carefree about it than any incarnation of Bond save Roger Moore.

Maybe it was just the resemblance. It's been a long time since I saw TP and when I saw it, it's been a while since I saw TMFU!

Whilst it might have been nice to say have McCallum as Waverly, I think that they wouldn't want to have any original cast members in anything but a cameo. But they are keeping to the orignal show with a British Head of UNCLE.

He looks too big for the suit, like he's still at his Superman weight. I'm used to a leaner Solo.

Now, now, I do believe you're the man who frequently says that an adaptation doesn't have to be exactly the same as the original!
