Dina Meyer as Captain? Nice idea! I also think having Glau in Star Trek would be cool.
Haven't we seen Meyer in the captain's role? I wouldn't mind seeing Commander Donatra again, though. I loved Glau in The Sarah Connor Chronicles and think she'd be a great Trek character.

^Following up on my previous post, I think Carl Lumbly would make a great Trek character, maybe as Romulan. Michael Vartan is another Alias alum whom I think would be great if Will Decker's character were ever recast in a new series.

I think there's a bit of a danger bringing in well-known actors for major roles on Trek, especially well-known genre actors. You could divide your projected audience before you've filmed a single frame.

It would depend on how the actor/actress was used, IMO. Someone like Glau or Lumbly would be great as a guest star or recurring character (like Whoppi Goldberg) but not as a main character for the exact reason you mention. One of the things I like about Trek is the show's ability to elevate previously unknown actors by associating them with its brand name. I had no idea who Michael Dorn was before I saw him in TNG; now, I'd recognize him in just about anything he did.

I know Meyer was in Star Trek: Nemesis as a Romulan commander, but I don't know if she ever played a starship captain on one of the series.

She didn't. Nemesis is her only Trek role to date.

Too short an appearance. Donatra was one of the few things that I liked in Nemesis.

Agreed. I also felt like her character was underutilized in the novels and hated how she was portrayed in Rough Beasts of Empire. The scene where she meets with Sisko scarred me for life.

I haven't read that one, but I really enjoyed Donatra in the first 2 Titan novels. A great character, which I liked from first seeing her in Nemesis.

I would hope that if we got a new Trek series that featured Kirk and Spock, that it would eventually evolve to include all the characters we know. But at first, I'd like to see a focus on Kirk and Spock.

The forcing everyone together from day one is my only real sore spot with the Abramsverse films. It's the same issue that I have with Enterprise: The First Adventure by Vonda McIntyre.

I can think of lots of actors, ones who regularly do TV, that would be wonderful in a new Trek. Even a partial list:

Jaime Murray
Benjamin Bratt
Christina Ricci
The entire cast of Fringe
Ditto the casts from everything written and produced by Joss Whedon
Anybody from Battlestar: Galactica re-imagined or its prequel(s)

Sounds like a majorly badass crew composition there

I do think Dina Meyer would be a great Captain. I'd also like to see Jensen Ackles and Wentworth Miller in the main cast.
She was very good in Starship Troopers.

SPOILER ALERT! (1997. I know, right? )

She was one of the few characters that seemed genuinely human, surrounded by propaganda film heroes.
