Pretty good episode and it seems more and more, but especially with this episode, that they are using Priors/Origin as a stand in for radical Islam.
The comparison doesn't really hold though. Despite what this episode tries to claim, the Ori's followers are not interpreting their holy texts in a way to suit their own agenda, they are in actual contact with the Ori themselves and following their exact instructions.

While as an a episode it was decent I felt it ill timed as it didn't do anything to really further the main plot with the Ori. With 7 episodes to go this filler episode just felt wasted at this point.

Well, the episode The Road Not Taken does show a constant effort of working on the device, and not have it all of a sudden working perfectly, so, there is that.

And, it's not the last episode that will frustrate you on that front, with not doing anything to tie up the Arc. Keep in mind, Episode 10.20 (Series Finale) does not end the Arc, the First DVD Movie, Arc of Truth is what ties up the Ori/Adria Arc.
In their defense, the writers/producers thought they were getting an 11th season, but SyFy cancelled the show after 200 wrapped up production or aired (I can't remember).

You know since I've been doing this thread and with the kind assistance of you guys I'm not shocked by that. Allegedly the show was going to end two other times as well. Was it the end of seasons 5 & 7, I think? Figures the one time they aren't ready at the actual end there isn't a bow on things, thus needing the movie(s) for closure. In an ironic way then it feels very Farscape-esque.

On that note how many DVD Movies are there?
I see on Amazon a two pack of Ark of Truth/Continuum.
Are these the only two? Do they play in that order AoT then Continuum?
Looking at this monster box set which has several discs of extras I'm not certain the movies are on them, but will look of course before taking action.

Every year starting with season 5 they believed it was going to be the last, up to season 8 where they went ahead and wrapped things up. In fact, season 9 was originally pitched as season 1 of a spin-off series to be titled Stargate Command. It was SyFy who insisted on keeping the SG-1 name. And so with seasons 9 and 10 they went ahead believing there would be a next season.

On that note how many DVD Movies are there

Yes, they are the only two and it is best to watch them in that order.

Re: Stargate SG-1 - First time viewing of whole series

10x14-The Shroud: Daniel finally returns....as a Prior!!! Also Adria is in tow, she intends to use Daniel as her tool to not only finish Merlin's weapon and turn it on the Ancients in our galaxy but to use Daniel to convert Earth!! Little known to Adria is that Merlin is inside Daniel and therefore able to temper the transformation into a Prior. Daniel still fully retains who he is thanks to Merlin. After being captured by Adria Merlin and Daniel(in the same body) discussed(?) a plan to defeat the Ori but completing the weapon and sending it through the SuperGate back to the Ori galaxy. First, Daniel need Prior abilities to pilot the ship AND be captured by SG-1 in order to relay the plan and have the SuperGate shut down. Jack makes a return this episode, I presume cause the stakes are high, to try and figure out if Daniel is really Daniel in there or if this is some Ori trick. Daniel attempts to reassure them that after the plan is pulled off Merlin will exit Daniel's body and in doing so convert him back into his normal state. Teal'C feels Daniel is telling the truth but also in tow this episode is Woolsy who after making a bad judgement call to keep clone Anubis alive is ordered by his superiors that they should execute Daniel.
Daniel won't let this happen and puts his plan into motion anyway. Which means storming the Ori ship where Adria and the weapon are. Daniel takes SG-1 with him to do this. The weapon is activated, SuperGate shut down and they all beam out to safety. Presumably the weapon activates and if all goes to plan, wipes out the Ori. It's realized that their followers though will be unharmed---they could retaliate. And on cue, the SuperGate shortly opens up and a number of Ori ship come through and warp out to destinations unknown.
So---did the weapon work? Are the assumptions right or not? Those ships are ambiguous imo.

10x15-Bounty: So I fully expect this episode to pick right up but instead it's a break from that and we are watching SG-1 break up and destroy the wagon train of "Evil Orvill Reddenbachar" as Mitchell put it. This is part of the Lucian Alliance's shipment that Netan is overseeing. This is the last straw cause that's 3 shipments in a row, their supply is low and he can't be allowed to look any weaker than SG-1 has made him out to be. He places a bounty on SG-1. The bounty mainly focuses on Cameron Mitchell's off duty moment to attend a 20yr HS class reunion in Kansas. Vala(who I think I've been spelling with two L's, her name tag showed one though, begs to go along cause she never gets off base). Of course last time she went off base she was kidnapped so...., anyway. The wardrobe went out of there way to make Vala stand out. Between her Daisy Duke out fit and low cut dress(while the other women wore more conservative numbers) Claudia Black was on full display. Carter was MIA this episode.
A fun episode really but as I was told this would happen, oddly placed episodes while the timer is ticking down to what should be a full on Ori finale.

10x16-Bad Guys: Now this was a fun episode, again, about a First Contact scenario gone sideways. The SG-1 team, when accused of being Rebels, plays the part in order to stall so they can miss check-in and have Landry send them a portable dialing device. Seems the civilization has a Gate but only a replica of the DHD. The remote(I forget the name for them) seemed to indicate the Gate was in a cave but really it was a mockup in a museum. Anyway this episode does a type of riff on Die Hard in a way. Which amusingly Daniel doesn't immediately get when Mitchell tells him we have a John McClaine situation. Teal'C quickly lets him know. Overall a really fun episode but just, imo poorly timed. Also, where was Carter again this episode? Seeing as how there are 4 episodes to go. However, now that I know they had originally planned on a likely season 11 the pacing makes more sense. Even it it's frustrating a tad. I also feel that Mitchell and Vala then are a bit in the mold of Doggett and Reyes of S8-9 of X-Files.

One more disc, 4 episodes and 2 TV movies to go!!

Re: Stargate SG-1 - First time viewing of whole series

General Landry mentioned at the beginning of Bad Guys that Carter was in Washington talking about her experience in the alternate reality to the President and Joint Chiefs to give them an idea of what could happen should the Stargate go public. The real world reason for her absence what that Amanda Tapping had made a guest appearance on Atlantis and so got an SG-1 episode off. Same deal as the two or three episodes Landry was absent for this season.

Also, fun fact, it was during filming of Bad Guys that the show's cancellation was announced.

Re: Stargate SG-1 - First time viewing of whole series

10x17-Talion: The fractured Jaffa Nation is still reeling from the attacks on it and a secret meeting is being held by faction leaders. Teal'C and Bra'tac are in attendence and when Teal'C misses his scheduled check-in SG-1 goes to see why and discovers the meeting has been bombed. Many are dead, many more wounded, included quite badly Teal'C and Bra'tac. It takes 2 weeks for Teal'C to recover. Teal'C believes one of his former students is responsible and also a follower of Origin. Again, a Jaffa wishing to lead the Jaffa Nation into the arms of the Ori. Due to the tense political situation Landry can't allow an SGC team to hunt down Teal'C's suspect. If he's killed it would only escalate tensions. Teal'C demands vengeance and leaves SGC. He begins his own search.

The SGC however realizes that should Teal'C succeed it will still look as if it was sanctioned. They set a trap for Teal'C at the location of the saboteur. Teal'C begins to take the team out in what is a good exchange. Especially the Mitchell fight, he's sorely outmatched. Teal'C finds his quarry and in what is one of the more graphic one-on-one fights I can recall of late Teal'C gets the upper hand after being stabbed in the gut. I guess adrenaline carried him through, cause he ends up back under Dr. Lam's care. A good episode that didn't resolve anything, made things worse. Still, no Ori and we are closing on series end.

10x18-Family Ties: A comedy episode? A bit of fun before the finale begins and it's about meeting Vala's dad. Interesting in that if anything it demonstrates that Vala gets her unscrupulousness from him clearly. He seeks asylum on Earth in exchange for information about a plot to destroy Earth by Death Gliders loaded with weapons grade naquida. The real plan is that her dad, Jasic, plans to sell the naquida to the members of Gou'ald Trust members on Earth. SG-1 lays a trap for him and when Jasic thinks he's made off with the plunder he really hasn't. Vala, who I think was genuinely trying to trust him is rewarded with the mistrust she always knew of with Jasic. Jasic flies off to make another deal with the weapons grade naquida when he discovers the cargo containers have nothing but lead and....cheese puffs(?) in them. Without missing a beat he calls it some _______ viral enhancer and offers a free sample. The idiot smuggler likes them---and feels them working. Deal on! Everyone has plans so a group celebration is out...Teal'C had tickets to a show. The Vagina Monologues. Funny close.

10x19-Dominion: Finally, the beginning of the end...kinda, cause I know about the TV movies. Still, the return of Adria looks promising for attempting some arc of closure. The SGC, with Vala's help, comes up with a plan to trap Adria using Vala as bait. The SGC uses the memory implant device from that episode where Mitchell was accused of murder to make it work. Knowing that if Adria doesn't believe she's been outcast then Adria will see through the ruse. As the plan reaches it's fruition a platoon of Jaffa beam in and wisk Adria away. Who has her now...Ba'al!! Now I gotta say, the reveal here is so obvious that I can't believe I didn't see this type plot device coming. Carter even says that(as if she was speaking for me[audience]) during a post mission briefing. Ba'al is going to jump hosts from the bearded Ba'al we know and into Adria. SG-1 clearly has to stop this from happening, they arrive to late but in time to kill the host body that we've come to know so well. But what about those clones?? What we do presumably learn from Ba'al/Adria hybrid is that apparently the mission to destroy the Ori did indeed work a few episodes back. So the SGC has our hybrid foe and now seeks to implant a Tok'ra into Adria and kill Ba'al for good. Ba'al says if he's forced out he'll poison the body...and when they do, he does. Ba'al's symbiote is now destroyed but a lethal cocktail is killing Adria's body, with her powers suppressed she is going to die. Well the kicker is like Wolverine with suppressed healing from his newest movie, same thing for Adria here, she is just strong enough to escape. I assume setting up next episode? Really, really, really enjoyed this episode though!!

One more episode to go!!!
Saving it for when I can watch Ark of Truth. Going to make a run at those together.

Irony: I was going to outright buy Ark of Truth/Continuum(and may at a later date when the price drops) but it's a $25 set on Amazon right now. I only paid $55 for all 10 seasons!! So I'm Netflixing Ark of Truth and that should be arriving next week(have Apocolypto to watch first that just arrived today).

Family Ties is best known among fans for its bitter in-jokes about the show's cancellation. "The Stargate program doesn't get the respect it used to." "Why not?" "Eureka!"

Re: Stargate SG-1 - First time viewing of whole series

10x20-Unending: I must say that as a standalone show, perhaps even a typical season ender this episode would've been sufficient. I know thanks to you guys they didn't find out till too late to alter things that they'd been permanently cancelled. The Asgardian race has resigned to the fact they can't alter their genetic path, they are going extinct and in facing that reality are going to relinquish all their knowledge and gifts to the humans. Reversing course on seasons of "no we can't give you the tech". LOL!!. In the events of this happening the Ori attck the Prometheus with SG-1 on board. A seeming death strike is sent but Sam traps the Prometheus in a time dilation field(same one used to trap the Replicators) where time passes infinitesimally slower to those in the bubble. We watch the SG team spend years trying to figure out how to avoid the death strike but there is a timing issue with making it work. We watch them age and Landry die as well as Daniel and Vala becoming a couple. As luck would have it Sam finally finds a way around the problem, now they are all well into their late 50's, early 60's though. In order to make it work someone has to stay behind to see things activated accurately. Teal'C makes the choice saying that even aged, he has many years ahead and the rest should go, to return to as they were. It works and despite Prometheus destruction the team survives and is returned to their younger selves. Only Teal'C, now older and marked with a thick gray path above the temples, knows and recalls what happened during those years. The episode ends with the team standing at Gate's edge reciting a string of axioms before going through the Gate on one more adventure.

My thoughts would be that a true series finale would have O'Neill, Quinn and other key support characters in tow while being double length. I know, I know they didn't know and couldn't plan.

Ark of Truth: This movie felt like a planned wrap up as it included Ori soldiers, the return of Adria, the lone Ori who is all powerful, Merlin via visions, Morgan LeFey and Replicators...what, Replicators!!! Still no O'Neill but it was a great wrap up all the same.

Continuum: This felt like a very retro mid-season two parter episode. I dare say I was more into this than Ark of Truth + it had O'Neill + Hammond. Am I the only one who in a time altered state would've liked Quinn stopping buy? Especially since this is the last tele-film and a wrap for SG-1 adventures basically. This version of the script wouldn't accommodate him but it could've be reworked a bit, like when we got Dr.Frasier that one time with parallel universe stories. It was fun seeing Ba'al sliced in half from the torso up by Que'tsh(Vala) a very cool visual. This would end just as 'Unending' did, with the gang going through the Gate yet again. So essentially telling us that SGC and the crew that despite Atlantis(which promos for S4 tell me Carter takes control, spoiler alert!!) is still operating.

This franchise should return to the big screen from whence it was birthed.

That concludes my 11 month journey through 10 seasons and 2 tele-films of watching Stargate SG-1 for the first time and I am glad I own them for sure. It was a fun experience and I'd like to thank everyone who gave me tips and pointers along the way while not spoiling anything for me. Thanks again and down the road I feel an Atlantis first time thread will be coming!!

Re: Stargate SG-1 - First time viewing of whole series

I preferred Ark of Truth over Continuum, primarily because I felt it was a mistake with continuum to waste an entire movie on a reset button, especially the movie that has ended up being the final SG-1 adventure. To be honest, although I was really critical of Continuum when it was first released I have since learned to enjoy it somewhat. Although I think it is just a combined retread of Lost City and Moebius. Also, I found Ba'al's original plan of manipulating Earth's governments into loyally serving him was more interesting than what Vala or whatever her snake's called just bombarding the fuck out of the planet.

Re: Stargate SG-1 - First time viewing of whole series

I watched them both just 3 days apart and you notice I spent just a tad more time speaking to that one in my closing remarks. While I liked both, and do see your point about a "reset button" show I enjoyed Continuum all the way through.

Ark of Truth felt a lot like what a Series Finale should've been and perhaps because it was as it should've been I didn't feel the need to address it as much with detail. It wrapped up and answered (all) the main points that S9-10 had been building to.

It's a bit ironic I suppose that I found 10x20, Unending, also a reset show to be underwhelming(not bad mind you) but really enjoyed Continuum.

I was talking to one of my coworkers and she says there were talks of possible other SG-1 films at some point? I guess if those were going to happen they would've by this point. Maybe she meant Atlantis tele-films?

Ark of Truth and Continuum were 2 of 3 planned Videos, but, the Studio financial trouble put a kibash on the third, I think, and also I believe there was talk of an Atlantis Followup movie, and I believe more movies as long as they kept paying for themselves

Re: Stargate SG-1 - First time viewing of whole series

Yep there was at least one more planned SG-1 and one SG:A direct to DVD movie planned. But MGM sort of went bankrupt.

As for "Unending", it was stated way back in S2 that the Asgard believed humans to be the fifth race. This episode was basically saying you've made it. After all the Tau'ri were basically responsible for the fall of the Gou'ald, freeing the Jaffa. In a few short years humans went from nothing to being a player on the intergalactic stage. The Asgard had been working with them for a while giving them bits of tech like beaming technology. Besides it would still take humanity decades if not centuries to understand everything in the Asgard database.
