Alternate History Movie Casting

OK, here's an idea: recast some of your favourite movies. The movies are made in exactly the same way (script/directing, ect) and made in the same year as they were in real life, only substitute the real cast with your own choice actors (who were the right age at the time or sadly no longer with us now).

Here's my choice alternate cast ensemble for key Bond movie, GoldenEye (1995):

GoldenEye

James Bond - Liam Neeson

Alec Trevelyan - Peter Firth

Natalya Simonova - Gina Bellman

Xenia Onatopp - Jeri Ryan

Jack Wade - Robert Wagner

M - Helen Mirren

Col./General Ourumov - Rade Sherbedgia

Zukovsky - Nicholas Worth (RIP)

Boris Grishenko - Andy Serkis

Defence Minister Dimitri Mishkin - Nick Brimble

Scotty: Billy Connolly
Nero: John Malkovich

(stumped at the moment for the rest of the cast)

Connolly or Ferguson. Now that's a difficult choice!

No, Ray Stevenson as Scotty (who also has Northern Irish ancestry like James Doohan).

^ Damon was a bit old to have played Jim Kirk per XI's script, don't y'all think?

The question is an interesting one. If a movie's one of your favorites, would you really want to mess with its casting? And if it isn't, do you really care? Anyhow, I've got a few suggestions:

- I've got nothing against Viggo - he's a very fine and soulfoul actor - but I've always kinda wanted to see Oded Fehr as Aragorn.

- Not a big HP fan, but Gambon should've been Dumbledore from the start. A legendary wizard that even Voldy was afraid of? In Chamber, Harris could barely speak above a whisper!

- It was far from a great movie, but even though Philip Pullman personally lobbied Nicole Kidman to play The Golden Compass' Mrs. Coulter, as good as she was, I'd have loved to see Rachel Weisz in that role. (Indeed, in the books, Mrs. Coulter is black-haired!)

- Speaking of which, I've previously admitted my fondness for 27 Dresses, which features a strong performance from James "Cyclops" Marsden, but I think Ms. Weisz could have brought even more depth and fun to the part.

- Someone on another board recently pointed out that the humans and arcade in Wreck-it-Ralph should've been live-action actors and film.

- Adam Beach as Tonto. Duh.

- And I hope that if they do bring back J. Jonah Jameson in the new Spider-Man series, they pull a Judi Dench in Casino Royale and bring back J.K. Simmons.

Re: Alternate History Movie Casting

I see this as a chance to fix great lost opportunities of the past:

Arsenic and Old Lace (1944) should have featured Boris Karloff, not Raymond Massey playing a Karloff lookalike. (Backstory: Karloff was too busy playing the part on stage to do the movie version, even though the whole joke is that the character is a dead-ringer for Karloff.)

Batman (1966) should've featured Julie Newmar as Catwoman, not Lee Meriwether. (Newmar was busy shooting another movie at time.) Even as a kid, it bugged me that the movie didn't have the "real" Catwoman . . . .

West Side Story (1961) should've featured Elvis as Tony, who would have been a lot more memorable than whoever it was who actually played the part (whose name I can't be bothered to look up).

Oh, one more: Let's put Sean Connery in On Her Majesty's Secret Service instead of Lazenby, just because it's a crying shame that we never got Connery and Diana Rigg together in a Bond movie!

I still weep for the missed opportunity of The Wild, Wild, West starring George Clooney and Kevin Spacey - and no giant mechanical spiders!

Which is why in my version, ST09 is set right after TAS.

I think he would have been at least distracting and probably less believable.

My takes
The Shining-Shelley Duvall did fine but I'd prefer Mia Farrow.

Dangerous Liaisons-Alan Rickman or possibly Colin Firth as Valmont.

Harry Potter-Ian Holm as Moody or Slughorn (though Broadbent did fine as the latter) and John Hurt as Voldemort (though he may have been too old).

Watchmen
-Not a big Brad Pitt fan but he'd probably be better as Ozymandias than weak link Matthew Goode.
