It has the population, but Trek doesn't have enough popularity there to make that kind of money. STID will hopefully post a good increase over the $5.8 million that Star Trek grossed in Japan, though.

If Star Trek 13 is shooting next year it'll be out in 2015 !

Aim for Christmas 2015 because there is a gap in the market for a big budget scifi action film then!! Do it Paramount you know you want to. Summer 2015 would be a bad idea due to that other 'Star' thing.

Yep, that's pretty much what I was actually getting at - popularity!

was Star Trek popular in China?

star trek2009 box office - 8,556
STID2013 box office - 56,910

The Chinese market has developed dramatically for Hollywood films since 2009, so there was room for a huge increase there. Japan was already a mature market for Hollywood films in 2009, so while there's room for significant improvement with a bigger marketing push, there's not as much room for growth as in China. STID may well double or triple the Japanese gross of Star Trek, but more than that will be tough.

Yea, they'll definitely put it over $450M, if it's not already there, by the time it opens, but, they only brought in about $5.8M for ST'09, so, it's very unlikely they'll bring in $54M+ (US take is now down to less to than $500,000 per day, and will continue getting smaller, and leaving theaters, so, Japan is about all the big jump left)

nuSTIII will release sometime in 2016 and the marketing will include the "50th Anniversary of Star Trek" somewhere.
Hopefully people won't think you have to be 50 to watch it.

Nice to see Star Trek's Damon Lindelof get the credit for rescuing World War Z from financial ruin, and its initial D+ test score.

From last week on there are 5 countries that have/will release STID. Im guessing $2-3 million from 4 of those countries, and $10-12 million from Japan. We're looking at $465 million tops. Still a good total.

I would but my Japanese "friend" (wife) lives with me here.

Hey now, that's pure speculation. She could have become an outcast when she married Belz. Being ostracized for dishonoring her family may mean she has few friends left in Japan. Belz can't be held responsible for STID's box office total over there.

Benedict Cumberbatch last night concluded a massively successful Into Darkness PR campaign in Japan.

Tickets for the 3 screenings of the film in Tokyo sold out in 3 minutes. More than 100 media outlets, including 30 from television, covered his press conference.

At last night's event he was presented with a plaque containing pictures of all his magazine covers with the title, 'the cover face of 2013 in Japan.' There's also a photo of him standing in front of a giant poster of John Harrison... wearing a crown. (Uh, Harrison, not Cumberbatch!)

Japan's looking very promising! Here are some pictures: http://cumberbatchweb.tumblr.com/pos...art-2-the-nice

Very impressive!

Cumberbatch has a nice following in Japan it would seem because I remember he was 'mobbed' at the airport in Dec 2012 when he went to Japan to show the 9 minutes.

He was also on Top Gear and both he and Jeremy Clarkson had only nice things to say about Star Trek... and that is the most watched program in the world

I do feel STID may just have that final big push in it, dragging itself up to $470m. As I stated up thread, that really is a decent total, a far stronger finish than I speculated on a few weeks ago.
