Re: Season THREE OFFICIAL TNG Blu-Ray Discussion Thread

So I finally got season 3 (Amazon's "one day" delivery turned out to be four), and am astounded so far. I've only watched Evolution and The Ensigns of Command, but it's such a revelation. The colours just blast out of the screen, and the whole thing seems so much more vibrant than before. I'm noticing things I've never noticed before, like the colour of the carpet on the bridge, and those purple chairs in the observation lounge. Purple! Not fuzzy grey after all...

The lighting on the Sheliak ship in Ensigns of Command looked stunning, really feature-film standards. I love the mysterious look of the Sheliak itself, though it's a shame they had to use that rather crummy ship the smugglers had in Star Trek III. The space shots in Evolution looked superb. So cool how much work was done way back in the eighties, and how well it holds up today.

The viewscreen shot of the Uxbridge home - in the original, it was just a fuzzy green square. In the remaster, you can clearly see the house and the cement border.

Is the house element new? If so, that's some incredible attention to detail.
I think the whole planet might be new.
The matte painting of the surface looks different, too. Trees in different places.

Ex-Astris has started putting up observation articles for S3 now:

First impressions: Once again, the impressive bold colours, the sharper models of the Lysian ships, the (presumably recreated) soliton wave effect, and the beautiful exteriors from "Time's Arrow". I'm personally a bit disappointed that the "firecracker" explosion was left in for "Cause and Effect" though.

I'm still impressed by the remastering. Every episode looks awesome.

CBS-D have done, and are still doing, such an amazing job.

The VFX upgrades are so faithful, I have no need to go back and get the DVDs for the unaltered episodes, like I did for TOS.

It looks like it was pretty tricky to flip the registry around for this reversed shot:

I noticed it was done several times during the season. It's just a little bit off. The "NCC" part looks smudged.

Way better than HTV though. They removed the registry, but forgot to put anything back in its place:

Not to derail the thread, but... why did you do that when the unaltered episodes are on the bluray in HD?

I got both the TOS and TOS-R box sets on DVD prior to having a Blu-ray system.

My point is that there is no need to choose between two very different sets of VFX.

Faithful these are, but I'm really starting to wonder if this is a good thing (like the CGI recreation of the 4-footer ).

In this screencap from "The Enemy" the Romulan Warbird "correctly" passes the Enterprise on the starboard side, but conveys the incorrect impression that both ships have roughly the same size.

But the Romulan Warbird is a much, much bigger ship and the reconstruction of the aforementioned shot provided an opportunity to make the Romulan Warbird pass the Enterprise's bottom and thus convey its correct dimensions.

They never showed ship sized correctly. Everything was roughly as big as E-D, which sort of negated the "grandness" of the ship.

Watched The Most Toys tonight and just noticed in one shot, Kivas Fajo has tears that roll down his face when he tells Data of his troubled youth. I never saw that with the DVDs before. The weird thing is right after he says he's lying, but now I wonder was he?

That was also the first time I noticed the tear... totally hidden on DVD

That tear was brilliantly played too. It adds a lot to the character.

I haven't seen that episode in years but I swear I remember seeing the tear on TV when it was first aired.
