Re: Space Battleship Yamato 2199

You might be able to watch them on feed from the TV episodes since those should be coming out in September. But unless a subbing group does something, there won't be any subtitles until late October. Unless one of the limited edition holders does something with their mail ordered copy which they'll get sometime in September.

I wonder about the various international crowd that will be their in the theaters in late August. Will they be able to order a Limited Edition BD and get it shipped out of the country. Or will they have to have it set to a Japanese mailing address and then shipped to them.

Well, there are already groups out there that have the movie version up like this one that I had posted previously:

http://www.pinoyanime.tv/space-battl...mato-2199-ova/

There are a lot of others too... Also, it seems they are using the BD versions since it has the subtitles already and some maybe doing the subtitles if they have the DVD version. I noticed on a few eps at one site that some of the eps, the subtitles were off key or did not work for at least 5 mins. So some probably did re subtitles for them. Like the ones in the link I gave here.

Means if there are any fansub groups out there, they will be the ones subbing episodes 23-26 before the BD and DVD come out in October. Unless one of them manages to get the mail order BD via a theater ticket, which won't arrive until the middle or end of September for them any way. Around the time of the last episode or two airing.

I hear that episode 1 of 2199 was screened at Anime Expo dubbed. So there's definitely a chance that we might get a full US release down the line.

Edit: Here's confirmation

I hope they don't chop it up to make it more "kid friendly" like they did with the original.

I doubt they'd need to do anything for the BD release and if they plan to get it on TV/streaming, they don't really need to do anything besides make sure they use the TV cuts to avoid fanservice problems.

I don't see it getting on the air here in the states because of all the violence and blood. That would have to be edited too. I do not want them to change the names at all. Nor do I want to see it cut either. The FCC rules will prevent it from being aired unless its on one of the cable channels. Cartoon Networks Adult Swim may be able to air with limited edits.

Re: Space Battleship Yamato 2199

Reports from Anime Expo and France say that the only real change in the dubbing is the ship's name. It is back to being "Argo".

The character names are still their Japanese names and all the other ships are still Japanese. Only Yamato's name is removed and replaced.

There are a few other translation changes but most of those are similar meaning words. This seems to be a marketing tool, so if it gets picked up the locals might do enough research to standardize the technical names and places with previous dubs and subs (The specifc one people are complaining about is the Star Blazers 2199 sub track calls the engines Tachyon Wave Engines. Though that is sort of correct in what it uses, it has generally been translated as Wave Motion Engine since I think the bad 1977 "Star Cruiser" dub.

According to those in France, the staff are saying the change to Argo is deliberate because "Yamato" might be a bad things in the potental Chinese markets. Yamato being an old word sometimes associated with Japanese Nationalism and Imperialism. The staff probably think the name might hurt sales.

My question would be how much expense will they go through to remove the word "Yamato" from the show? The name is kind of on a lot of stuff. Both in English and in Japanese. What most international viewer won't notice the name "Yamato" in Japanese, the Chinese will. They probably will notice it in English as well....in giant capital letters most most places we see it. YAMATO

You know, while I do loathe the SyFy channel; it DID air 8 of the original (U.S. butchered) "Starblazers" episodes. So, maybe someone should show their programming purchaser the dubbed 2199 Blu-Ray episodes and see if they'll consider airing it in the U.S.?

It'll never happen because SyFy axed its anime block years ago.

That said, the revived Toonami block would be a great place for Star Blazers 2199.

Re: Space Battleship Yamato 2199

I hope the existence of a dub doesn't mean that they will only do a dub-only release for a NA release. That will curb reverse importing, but I don't think I could handle English voices. :/

The delay of the final volume makes sense. This way, there's no possible way that the episodes leak out before it finishes airing on TV.

Yeah, I don't think I'm digging the whole dubbing thing. Rarely does it ever track well with the original. Give me a decent subtitling - no "All Your Base" nonsense - and I'll be happy. It would cost a lot less in the long run, too.

Re: Space Battleship Yamato 2199

Most companies today release subtitled anime or subtitled anime with their dubbed track. Aside from older anime, ever since DVDs came about I've seen English dubde anime that still retains a subtitled track in Japanese. At that was from the 1990s. Well and I suppose heavily altered anime from an old property (Transformers).

Maybe something changed in the market, but I've not bought a American DVD released anime for five or six years (Galaxy Railways and Full Metal Panic were the last new anime I purchased locally).

The Toonami block is more for edgy stuff like Casshern, Naruto, Deadman Wonderland and SAO.

well, the ease with witch subtitled anime is freely available on the internet pretty much doomed the North American Anime of DVD market (not judging, just stating what I've seen talked about as to why many of the NA companies and distributors - some Japanese backed; effectively called it quits in the U.S.)

Funimation survives by licensing stuff to the Cartoon Network; and has an Anime channel on some cable providers; but there's really not a lot of Anime on the market per se compared to the late 1990ies - 2005 or so in the U.S. Those that want it know how/where to get it for free, and there's not a lot of more mainstream appeal to support companies trying to bring it direct to DVD/Blu-Ray in the U.S. these days.
