IMO, it's an issue of different strategies or catering to different markets. Unlike the smaller companies which may dabble a little in the retail market, Hasbro does most of its business in there. Retailers really don't like very expensive high-end toys on their shelves because they tend not to sell very well. It's easier to move them in specialty shops and online stores (in limited production runs) because they cater to the smaller customer base willing to shell out big bucks for toys.
Toys R us Pricing:

NECA Aliens, a super articulated and highly detailed 7" line with plenty of accessories, all of which are brand new sculpts from the ground up. $17.99

Hasbro Iron Man figures: A highly articulated and decently detailed 6" line with few to no accessories. All but a few of the figures are straight up repaints of previously released figures. $19.99

Explanation?

Re: The Action Figure and Toy Collecting and Discussion Thread!

Hasbro (and other companies) price gouging on the MSRPs is a popular theory that holds a lot of weight in the collecting community. Some price increases over the course of time are justified because of increased labor and material costs in China and that gets predictably and understandably passed along to the consumer, but it doesn't explain why NECA can turn out a product that is about the same size or even larger, looks much better, is aimed at a more adult and sophisticated buyer and and costs two dollars less.

^I know next to nothing about what those are, but I think the fire one especially looks really cool.

I was really impressed with the Xenomorph, so I had to go pick up Hicks and Hudson to go with him. They are just as awesome:

I am really impressed that NECA managed to nail every little bit of personalization on their armors down to Hudson's sardine can key on his codpiece, and the bullet hole on Hick's shoulder. There would have been so much temptation to just make these the exact same figure with a different head (which Hasbro or Mattel would have done.) They do share legs, but the rest is entirely different.

Not my point. I'm wondering how one can rationalize NECA making figures that are all completely new tooling, of a higher quality, and at a lower price point than Hasbro's line which is entirely reuse. It's either laziness or greed on Hasbro's part.

Re: The Action Figure and Toy Collecting and Discussion Thread!

It's artificially inflating the price. Why else repack the exact same Millennium Falcon that sold for $149.99 just a very few short years ago and now ask $249.99 for it? Labor and materials in Asia haven't gone up that much in just a few years, at least not enough to justify a whopping 67% increase in the retail price of an item that has nothing whatsoever changed or updated except the outer packaging.

In Star Wars collecting circles it's often called "the Nostalgia Tax," which is usually exacerbated by something being a retailer exclusive.

Some of the Avengers got together to celebrate the Fourth of July, as well as Captain America's birthday! Steve doesn't look 95, does he?

"D.C. or bust!" Uh-oh. I'm going to have a couple of stowaways when I go to Washington next week.

But I love it.

But it's definitely the answer.

They only do it because they know there are collectors who will pay it. That's how one can rationale it.

Just saw the Hot Toys Jor-El figure...I think they just went and topped themselves! I can't wait to see General Zod.

Yeah. Jor-El is freaking impressive. I can't wait to see the inevitable Zod.

Here's a link to a thread with pics of the figure.

Re: The Action Figure and Toy Collecting and Discussion Thread!

Something Big and Awesome on the Horizon for Star Wars 3.75" Collectors?

Judging from the graphics and the font used this might have something to do with the possibility of more and new Vintage Collection three-packs based on the old, classic Kenner figure sets sold at retailers like Sears in the late '70s and around the time of Empire.
