Anything with the words Madea or Big Momma in the title. Doesn't really offend my sensibilities, just my tastes. It's impossible to offend my sensibilities

Spielberg's "A.I."

I've only watched that movie all the way through one time. Typically I rage quit about mid way through the thing whenever I've tried to give it a second viewing. Pissed me off all the more when they brought the mother back at the end--even if it was for one more day.

Wait what? It's been a while since I've seen those movies... but how was Iron Eagle patriotic bullshit? Isn't the plot that the US Government sells out a downed pilot to some tinpot dictator for political reasons, and his teen son decides to steal a jet fighter to try and rescue him?
The mean American hating A-rab dictator and his mean American hating A-rab minions do mean things to our brave serviceman (who is in THEIR country for some reason). And the biggest thing that sticks in my craw from that movie (so much that I still remember it years later) was the put down of President Carter, who was ridiculed, and the idea that the "tough guy" Ronald Reagan was going to swagger in and make everything alright. Give me a break.
You've got it slightly wrong.

Although you were correct in that it was an Arab Dictator (oddly enough, appearing to be a Saddam clone even though at that point he was seen as a western ally), who was flexing his muscles by attacking the US aircraft in international airspace NOT in their country, the whole premise of the movie was that the American Government, even when they knew they were going to execute the pilot, were going to do JACK SHIT about it!

Arab dictators, African dictators and evil commies were all the rage then (just look at almost any episode of Airwolf!), and there were a lot of much more jingoistic pictures back in the '80's than Iron Eagle, like the aforementioned Red Dawn, and Delta Force.

^You are probably right about the degree of jingoism in "Iron Eagle" vs some of the other films you mention, its just that that Jimmy Carter reference always stuck in my head, and kept this movie at the top of my list for patriotic claptrap.

Re: Movies that OFFEND you

You're right, a single line or reference in a movie can stick in the craw despite what the rest of the film intends.

The President's speech in Independence Day came over to many as jingoistic, despite the fact that the whole speech was reiterating that the whole of humanity had to band together to deal with the threat, and America couldn't stand on it's own. "It will no longer just be an American holiday."

Sometimes people miss things like the fact that British, Israeli and Iraqi pilots were together on one base in the desert, at a time when Iraq was still a Big Bad Evil Nation!

Saving Private Ryan got criticized because they did not show the British on D-Day, yet it was an American Operation, in the American Sector of the campaign. Be a little like complaining The Dam Busters didn't have B17s!

Now, Objective Burma and U571 on the other hand...

It's pretty hard to offend me, but 120 Days Of Sodom did the trick.

I'm not familiar with that. Pasolini maybe?

However, the massive disingenuity in posts claiming that it's silly to find movies offensive always overlook the simple fact that movies include porn. No one argues the fact that someone can find that offensive, not even the people who are against censorship. (Which incidentally is not a thread topic.) My experience is that this tack is invariably inspired by a desire to rule out political or social criticism. Naturally religious criticism is always acceptable, since it is reliably reactionary.

I knew of the movie before I saw the Cinema Snob review/riff of it, but had never saw it. It's one of those movies that I'm sort of interesting in seeing it cause of the reactions people have to it. But at the same time, I don't think I could make it through it.

Well it's all down to personal opinion. If someone finds porn offensive--whatever the reason--I can't say that they're right, or they're wrong. It's a personal choice.

That said, I do find misogynist porn to be offensive. The type where the woman is treated about an equally as a lifeless fuck-doll--and no, not all porn is like that.

I wouldn't say offend, but I did feel insulted by JJ's two Star Trek movies, especially the ending of Into Darkness. Its one thing to be inspired by the original movie, but to lift entire scenes out of an old movie and plop it wholesale into a new movie with a senseless role reversal twist... combined with the unnecessary Kobiyashi Maru scene from the first Star Trek, it just feels like all he and his team can do is make bad copies of The Wrath of Khan.

I once got an angry three-page letter (by snail mail!) because of one throwaway line of dialogue that poked fun at Ronald Reagan.

And I was once accused of being "anti-God" because I set one scene in a gay bar.

I had heard of it before as well and had to see if it was as disturbing as I had heard. It was pretty hard to sit through.

Thanks for the heads up.

I'll say right now, I've not seen this movie and have no interest in seeing it. But even hardcore gore hounds that I know, that have seen it, hate it and rage quit it:

A Serbian Film.

Re: Movies that OFFEND you

I don't know what possessed me to watch Centipede on Netflix. I guess I figured it couldn't be as bad as people were saying, that it was some colossal hoax.

It wasn't as bad as people said. It was worse. What in the name of Christ would possess a director and producer to make the effort to film that loathsome, repulsive piece of shit?
