Spring or summer of 2016 is a better launch date than Christmas of 2015. No reason for them to consider the latter.

Tuesday number: $260,000 for $221,205,947 so far. Paramount is just giving an estimate for the Tuesday number at this point.

They can make it for Christmas 2015 and then do something else for the anniversary like a spinoff movie, new tv show or even film two movies back to back and have part 1 in 2015 and part 2 in 2016. Doesn't have to be 2016.
No.

The 50th Anniversary is a way to market EVERYTHING Star Trek during that year -- yes, us fans will jump at anything; but 'anniversary' milestones like this ARE a proven way to get the general public interested as well.

They would be crazy if they didn't release the next major Star Trek film (along with a crapload of other Trek stuff) during 2016.

Star Wars, yes. Star Trek, not sure... again, as far as the general public is concerned.

Now, if you score another acting coup like Cumberbatch, like a 'mainstream' popular actor or actress, then you never know.

Actually overdoing the 50th anniversary on a large scale might even alienate a segment of the population still brushing off the 'stigma' of basement dwelling Trek fans. To say nothing of the overseas market.

The 50th anniversary guarantees lots of extra free publicity. Newspapers, magazines, websites and TV shows doing retrospectives. Bookshops doing displays.

The 20th anniversary was a Really Big Deal. ST IV rode it well. And the general public responded.

Well, free publicity can't hurt, and might help, that's true. I was only concerned about the producers of the next movie actually harping on the 50th as a selling point to see the new installment, which could backfire something awful. Let the newspapers, magazines, etc. do the heavy lifting in that particular regard...

They would just be rushing to make another movie just so it could be released during a certain year, not because they actually have any kind of real good story to tell.

In the past, Trek has always avoided opening the same year as a Star Wars movie.

Huh? I'm fairly sure Orci & Kurtzman deliberately planted lots of seeds in STiD to ensure they have lots of potential good stories to tell. And the 5YM has just begun for the characters.

Well, there were only five to avoid after TMP's premiere, and a huge gap between the two trilogies.

BTW, although STiD has now seemingly completed its suburban and IMAX 3D runs in Sydney, Australia, it's still screening twice daily in the city:

It is my understanding that the movie is just making its debut July 5 in Spain. I am not sure what other locations are left after this. Here in my neck of NY state it still showing in the Regal cinemas and then will be shown in the Cinema Saver for some time after that.

I am quite confident that this movie has done very well and that the third movie will be out to coincide with the 50th anniversary.

And to be completely honest, I don't like seeing movies in theatres all that much because it's A) loud B) sometimes in 3D and C) full of people, and I usually don't like being around that many noisy, smelly idiots.
I'm the opposite. I hate seeing a movie when there aren't many people with me in the theater. For me, a big part of actually going to a public place to see a movie on the big screen is to have a shared experience, and without the energy and atmosphere of an excited crowd the experience kind of falls flat; I may as well have been in my room watching a DVD.
