These aren't proper fans I'm talking about, just friends and associates. Whenever I bring up Star Trek (I have no social skills, OK?), I always mention DS9 is my favourite and almost universally get a bad reaction. I then press people on why they don't like it and they clearly know nothing about the show so it must be some bandwagon. I'm lucky if people even know it's "the one with the black captain."

TNG is easily the most popular Star Trek show among everybody I know in real life. Which is awesome cus TNG is terrific, but I'd like to see a bit more DS9 love.

TOS and TNG certainly had a bigger impat on the general TV viewer than did DSn, VOY or ENT.

I think so. Definitely TNG was the go-to show in our household at least. DS9 probably lost a lot of people early on whilst those stuck with it loved it. I certainly only caught it on and off and it wasn't until the repeats that I realised how great it is.

I've noticed that too over the last 2 decades, you rarely meet anyone here in the UK who has heard of or likes DS9, and if you do, they are almost always fairly hardcore Trek fans.

Although... I was lucky enough to have a friend at secondary school who was a Trek fan, and we stayed friends until way after I finished university, and he absolutely hated DS9, barely acknowledging its existence. He of course totally adored Voyager.

SyFy made more cuts to the last two episodes of season three. The bit in Facets where Bashir/Torias waves his hand through the fire was removed - as was that awesome moment in The Adversary where the changeling smashes Dennis Madalone's head against the wall.

Put together a little compilation to show the kind of cuts SyFy have been making;

Really interesting to see them all together like that. Thanks for doing it.

Does anyone know if/when they'll get around to showing Season 4 onwards?

Watched DS9 on Syfy earlier (yes, Move ALong Home, not the best episode) and it feels like Syfy are tearing the episodes to ribbons - awful and completely undisguised jump cuts between scenes, dialogue out of sync with the image, repeating a section of footage after an advert break that had appeared just before the previous break... Terrible.

Unfortunately SyFy seem to be editing out some of the violence, and doing a pretty sloppy job. Marritza's death in Duet was shortened to remove any glimpse of the knife; we see the Bajoran standing outside Quarks watching as Marritza walks past, and then suddenly cut to him with the knife already in Marritza's back.

Necessary Evil last night was similarly affected; the Bajoran security officer getting stabbed was almost completely removed, and the assassin didn't even have a chance to pick up the pillow to smother Quark cos Rom just appeared out of nowhere to start screaming. Very irritating, particularly when this is the kind of violence that other channels would be perfectly happy to show at 3pm in various bland crime dramas. Don't remember ever seeing the show being quite so heavily censored before, Lord knows how it'll be when the Jem'Hadar and Klingons start carving people up...

That's too bad. The episodes should be uncut or not shown at all. Can't they just show them at 9pm or 10pm if they think there's a little too much serious adult content?

Well, I don't know. TNG was the first Star Trek that I liked, but I haven't seen most of it still. After watching at least some of all of them, it was DS9 that I ended up liking the most. That was before I heard anything about it being the most critically acclaimed or voted as the "best Trek" or anything like that. So, that's the one I watched all the way through. I've watched more of the others since, and all of ENT last year, but DS9 is still the best to me and I don't consider myself a "hardcore Trek fan" at all.

It must be the fact that they haven't seen much of it or any of it to know that it's actually really great.

Re: Cool, Syfy UK are showing DS9!

That's a bummer about cutting them up.

I know how it is about not knowing many people who really like DS9, though, and maybe it being on tv will make some more converts. Heck, I wasn't even a DS9 fan myself until very recently when a friend of mine repeatedly told me I needed to watch the whole thing on Netflix. I grew up watching TNG and then watched TOS, and I guess I (wrongly) figured that was enough Trek for me and I'd just watch those 2 repeatedly, forever. ^_^ I mean, I remember sometimes catching DS9 and Voyagen on TV when they first aired, but somehow I didn't really pay attention. I guess I didn't pay attention to DS9 because I missed a lot and didn't understand the backstories enough to care what was happening.

Actually they seem to have stopped that now. I've only noticed one trim to season 4 - during the neck break scene in Hard Time. Otherwise it's gone through uncut; even the neck break in To The Death, which was removed on the UK DVDs, was left in. As was the neck break in Body Parts, which was removed back when the BBC first showed it.

Wonder if my constant moaning/video making made them change their minds?

Mega balls-up tonight. No sign of The Emperor's New Cloak, the scheduled episode, and instead they showed What You Leave Behind Part 2.

Cos, y'know, it's only the series finale. Nothing major or anything. Why wouldn't you want to have it shown right in the middle of season 7? Idiots.
