Re: Matt Smith's Departure Confirmed.

I think they'll stick with a white male for the role of the Doctor, even if they did change gender or had a black/asian etc.. potray him. It could be seen as pandering to recent reports of sexism/racism in the show.

Any change in gender, ethnic background should be story driven.

I can see why the BBC might have wanted to keep Matt Smith's depature quiet, as if he is only onboard for the 50th and Christmas stories, that should mean we have a regeneration in the Christmas Day episode.

Re: Matt Smith's Departure Confirmed.

What I don't get is the need for all the misdirection. Okay, so the BBC's announcement of series 8 only mentioned Moffat, but Matt Smith said several times he was looking forward to another series and Jenna said her contract included series 8.

Makes me wonder if Matt wanted to do it but then changed his mind.

Exactly wrong. IF it happens, it should just happen. Pointing it out as abnormal is exactly the sort of soft racism that critics are highlighting.

Changing gender is a bit different, but we've already established that some Timelords change gender through their lifespan so really all you need is for The Doctor who have a reasonable response to finding himself as a herself.

Thirteen should be a woman. I would LOVE to see Alexander Siddig take a crack at the role, too.

Re: Matt Smith's Departure Confirmed.

Right now Doctor Who needs a popularity boost, an event. Getting a "name" actor to play the role is one way to get that. Now is not the time to find out if the audience will still like the show with a female lead.

Elba has been thrown around so much the last few years but while the man is a fantastic dramatic actor I've yet to see anything to suggest he would suit the Doctor. Seems like he is just tossed out as the one well known and talented black British actor.

Not only do I think he isn't particularly well suited to the role, but I doubt he would take it as he already has an established and consistent TV and film career.

Most of the fan favorites are just as unlikely for similar reasons.

If you want to do some affirmative action casting though, why not consider a few other names?

Chiwetel Ejiofor
Clint Dyer
Lennie James
Eamonn Walker
Yeah I agree, Elba is fantastic but I've never seen any indication that he could play a character like the Doctor. He just isn't that kind of actor...and you need the right kind of actor, and age, ethnicity and gender are irrelevent if you get the right person, Smitg proved that re age. If the next Doctor is black or a woman I'm fine with this so long as they're the right choice for the role rather than just there to tick a box.

Re: Matt Smith's Departure Confirmed.

Now here's an idea, how about David Tennant, anyone have any ideas what he's up to for the next 12 months stage and screen wise? I know it is unlikely and I know there are many who'd groan at the suggestion, but it would be a change to bring back a previous Doctor and could fuel some good story ideas.
Who knows what consequences would ensue from the Doctor regenerating (or should that be degenerating) into a past incarnation? It could be what sparks the creation of the Valyard.
Also the secrecy thing as to the identity of the new Doctor could be maintained, at least until filming on Season 8 starts. The regeneration scene could have been filmed for the Anniversary special and if not, Tennant's presence in costume during the filming of the Xmas episode could be explained away as re-shoots or 'pick-ups' for the Anniversary show.
I can just see the scene now as the end of the Xmas special, Matt Smith changes back to David Tennant who staggers over to mirror in the throws of post-regeneration stress looks at a mirror and exclaims "What? WHAT?"

Re: Matt Smith's Departure Confirmed.

Alexander Siddig is an actor I hadn't considered, but the more I think of it, the more I think he would be ideal. He's not a well-known actor, and he has the acting chops to do the role justice. Idris Elba may be banded about, but honestly I think he has too big a career, he's spent a long time building up his resume, and I don't think the BBC will be able to let him have enough time off to pursue the other roles he would enjoy, and Luther is still very successful.

As to a woman, while many of us fans may accept it, we aren't the people the BBC are aiming for.

If a woman becomes the Doctor, how many eight year old boys will be running around the playground with the new sonic, shouting "I'm the Doctor?"

Was chatting with a chap at my bookclub meeting yesterday. We bemoaned the downturn in the quality of recent Who, and he had an interesting take: that they are trying way too hard to appeal to the US market, to rake in even more dollars. The show has definitely changed, there's something missing.
What a bunch of crap. "Gotta dumb down the show and make it flashy for those Yanks!"

You've got to be kidding me. From 2005 to now the show has basically been the same. The only thing I've noticed is evolution. It's never lost its quirky British style. And it has never been high, award-winning drama -- either now or in the Classic era (from the 3rd, 4th, and 5th Doctor stories I've seen). I swear, some of you guys have a high-prescription pair of rose tinted glasses when it comes to Who.

Yes, everything went to hell when it became a success here. Right.
Did I say "dumbed down"? Nope. I'm commenting on what network executives (on both sides of the pond) might think a US audience wants to see, and we know how well that's panned out in the past. The BBC has dollar, not pound, signs in their eyes.

I'm opposed to the idea but I guess a way to make it interesting would be to bring Tennant back, but not as the 10th Doctor. He'd be a very different 12th Doctor, one that just happens to look similar to his 10th incarnation.

They'd never do it and he's too busy. Richard II at the RSC and a second series of Broadchurch.

Yes but you could say instead of 8 year old boys running around the playground shouting "I'm the Doctor", you could have 8 year old girls running around the playground "Shouting I'm the Doctor"

Well then, perhaps you could enlighten us with some of the changes you feel have been done for the sake of the American audience that have contributed to a drop in quality?
