No, the Christmas special hasn't been filmed yet. It'll film in August or September, enough time for Smith to grow his hair back after the movie for which he has (presumably) shaved it.

Jenna-Louise Coleman has said she's saying for series eight. But then again, so did Smith, in that recent magazine interview.

I'm just a grumpy old cus I guess, but I really hate the "so-and-so for the new Doctor!" game. Almost every time everyone's wrong and we get an actor that almost nobodies heard of.

And thank you SO much JNT for starting the whole "The next Doctor might be a woman" thing back in 1980.

It'd be funny if he regenerated into Billie Piiper, and then quickly grabs hir own ass... "I ALWAYS wanted to do that!"

^ Funnier if it were John Barrowman.

Or Karen Gillan, natch. But more funny weird than funny ha-ha, maybe.

I'll say it. I'm glad. While I've always liked Matt Smith, I love the building excitement of an impending regeneration, and discovering the new guy (or gal).

I like origin stories. They're cool.

Fantastic news. I thought no one could be worse than Eccleston, but Smudger ultimately plumbed that depth by acting like a hyperactive 6 year old dressed up from his grandad's wardrobe.

I suppose it'll be Miranda Hart next.

Well frak... I finally get caught up so I can watch them live and he's done after half a series.. I'm excited for the new one, but I will miss him, he really grew on me over his run.

No way they'll do a woman... I just don't see it.

Matt Smith official statement

http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/doctorwho...ave-Doctor-Who

Matt Smith says: "Doctor Who has been the most brilliant experience for me as an actor and a bloke, and that largely is down to the cast, crew and fans of the show. I'm incredibly grateful to all the cast and crew who work tirelessly every day, to realise all the elements of the show and deliver Doctor Who to the audience. Many of them have become good friends and I'm incredibly proud of what we have achieved over the last four years.
Having Steven Moffat as show runner write such varied, funny, mind bending and brilliant scripts has been one of the greatest and most rewarding challenges of my career. It's been a privilege and a treat to work with Steven, he's a good friend and will continue to shape a brilliant world for the Doctor.
The fans of Doctor Who around the world are unlike any other; they dress up, shout louder, know more about the history of the show (and speculate more about the future of the show) in a way that I've never seen before, your dedication is truly remarkable. Thank you so very much for supporting my incarnation of the Time Lord, number Eleven, who I might add is not done yet, I'm back for the 50th anniversary and the Christmas special!
It's been an honour to play this part, to follow the legacy of brilliant actors, and helm the TARDIS for a spell with 'the ginger, the nose and the impossible one'. But when ya gotta go, ya gotta go and Trenzalore calls. Thank you guys. Matt."

Re: Matt Smith's Departure Confirmed.

And there goes another one. Matt Smith is the Doctor that really seemed to appeal to the American audiences, since it was under his term the show really started building popularity in the US. It'll be interesting to see how the next Doctor goes over with Americans.

Also, I'm sure the Eleventh will continue to be active in novels or even audio dramas, if/when Big Finish gets the license to do the new series. After all, the Eleventh is one of the few to have a gap period during his run, and with him its a couple hundred years.

Well, I'm glad. I never warmed to him. Hopefully Moffat goes with him.

Not sure who I'd want for the 12th Doctor. Cumberbatch is too well known.

Agree. I can't wait to see Who the next Doctor is.

Re: Matt Smith's Departure Confirmed.

I notice a lot of people in this thread are throwing Cumberbatch's name around, but didn't he turn down the Eleventh Doctor, saying it's the wrong kind of publicity for him ("I don't want my face on lunch boxes")? Of course, he has done a Star Trek movie, which seems to contradict that claim.
