Shitty news, still not decided if 11th beats 10th but he' still been a great Doctor and will be sorry to see him go. I wonder if Stephen going to following soon as well or will he stay on to ride out 12.

so who will be 12?

I'll miss him but I love regeneration stories. Hopefully Moffat will abandon RTD's light show regeneration effect in favour of something suitably weird.

It says he will appear in the 50th and the christmas special... so what about the season in between that?

There is no season in between

50th- November 2013

Christmas- December 2013

Well, I'm bummed. Smith has been my favorite Doctor so far. I know it had to happen, but I was hoping he and Clara would get a another full season together.

Sad to see Matt depart, but I guess all things must have an ending (even though the Doctor hates endings). Matt Smith was fantastic from the beginning and was my favourite Doctor, really a tough act to follow.

Oh, wait,

Can I start a Tilda Swinton for the 12th Doctor petition?

Anyway...
A few ideas already:

I'm truly bummed.

I think Smith has done a great job as The Doctor. I wish he'd stay another season or two.

But then again, at the time I didn't think anyone could top Tennant, so hopefully lightning will strike again.

Well done, Matt!

I knew a girl like that when I studied in Strasbourg. Algerian, smelled of cinnamon....

Haven't thought of her for ages... And as for bases, well...

Honestly I think the last half of season 7 has felt like an end to the 11th doctor. He went to Trenzalore and overall it's felt like the end.

This is unfortunate, but not too surprising. Matt Smith was by far my favorite doctor since the show returned. Hopefully the next doctor will be significantly different.

I also like the Tilda Swinton idea. As luck would have it, I just saw her in Orlando the other day.

Re: Matt Smith's Departure Confirmed.

I could live with Tilda Swinton... But, I suspect she'd be a great one-off film/songle season Doctora, not a long runner. And I want a 4 season Doctor, just once post 1980!

The best example was when Tennant was in the prime of his run, people loved him. Now, I get the sense he's not fondly remembered. And let's not count how many instances there's been of bashing RTD because of Moffat lately.
For me, at least, I always loved what Tennant brought to the role, but he was held back by terrible scripts and direction that had him running around like a grinning idiot (as the Fifth called him) with all the subtlety of a donkey with a drum set. When he was allowed to settle down, he nailed it. But he basically had two modes: "HAVE YOU MET THE FRENCH? " or "I am deadly serious. " So it's not that I dislike Tennant, I just wish he had had better scripts from which to work.

Eccleston, though ... fuck, I would give a kidney to have had more time with him. Actually, I would probably give a kidney to see how Tennant would have handled the arc of Series 5, though Matt Smith was amazing and I will miss his presence terribly.

So I wonder how they're going to find him an extra 12 lives, I suspect something to do with going back into his own timestream he'll somehow come out before the 1st doctor and get all his lives back.

I agree with this. When I go back and rewatch Tennant episodes, I still really enjoy his performance, but the feel of the episodes themselves is just so much more over-the-top and cartoonish.

One of my favorite Tennant moments is from "The End of Time" when he talks to Wilf about the bad things he's done and how regeneration feels like dying. He basically breaks down. It was very well done.
