Re: Star Trek Online Discussion Thread (now free to play!)

True, they kinda force you into a different playstyle while leveling up. On the other hand it is kind of a sampling mode for endgame where you can make an informed decision on what kind of ship might be best suited for you in the long run. You can fly everything from a raider, to escort, to destroyer to cruiser.... just no science ship incidentally.

At T5 you get a choice of escort, cruiser, science with variations of their new original space whale/separable ship.

In the end I will pick the T'varo because it is the most Romulan ship in all of Trek. Updated design of the original Bird of prey and the TNG warbird just doesn't cut it (same fate as the Galaxy Class).

I have found one big, big thing wrong with the Romulan content:

You only realistically have one ship to choose from when you rank up. It's really grating having to go from a Mogai (basically an escort) to a D'deridex (a whale). That sort of play-style shift is just too much, especially for a new player. They throw you a bone with the T3 ship from the anniversary mission, but otherwise you are stuck. Sure, you could pay the still-freaking-ridiculous dil prices for the allied faction, but there is basically no chance of having that much dil before lvl 50; and at any rate, that much dil could get you A LOT of zen/rep/whatever.
Yeah, that's a damn bit of an annoyance with me too. I could see them requiring "X" faction's bridge officer on your crew to get "X" ship, but 40,000+d for lower tier ships? Fuck it.

So I should not start playing as a Rommie?

If you are new to the game play a Rommie. Their tutorial and quest line are very good and teach you how to play the game

The Romulan Faction alone is worth it. Right now I'm on Nimbus III. Yes, THE Nimbus III.

Can someone do me a favor? Since I'm not sure how to invite someone to the fleet, could someone invite Miko's Romulan?

Yup, the two Stargate franchise inspired missions were interesting. Being able to visit Stargate Command and protecting Atlantis from invaders in a puddle jumper were amusing.

I don't think I'm that far along, yet. I just finished chasing Hassan through the most awesome bar room brawl ever. That's when the server went down (fortunately after I completed it!).

By the way, every time I see "Hassan," all I can think of is "Hassan... CHOP!" from the Bugs Bunny cartoons.

Re: Star Trek Online Discussion Thread (now free to play!)

Well so far I can't say I'm impressed. The game runs rather slowly on my computer and the graphics are... dissapointing... though that may be because the game has lowered its graphics for my card (I _am_ using a 3 year-old office computer, although I played more graphic-intense games with my previous PC.)

And... did they just pit me against the Borg in the tutorial ? Poor Borg, ever weaker.

Not sure why you are disappointed in the graphics, might indeed be your settings and computer specs.

You might wanne check the Screenshot thread to see what some people squeeze out of their machine.

Not sure why the graphs would even matter that much in an online game. But that's a preference thing. I'm more hung up on the game play and what it's like to play with others. If I want beautiful graphs I play solo. Besides, the design matters more than the graphs in ST. And the design is great.

I'm dissapointed because, although graphics are the least important aspect of a game, I have the impression of playing a game made 10-12 years ago. Again, it might be my system, but it doesn't help me endure the lag.

Well, I think it's normal for MMOs not to have top notch graphics.
They deliberately keep polygon counts down so even people with low end machines can still play the game with decent performance.
