Can't say as I noticed it, but it was mentioned in one set of patch notes a while ago on Tribble.

Re: Star Trek Online Discussion Thread (now free to play!)

I'm starting to learn the game now. So many shiny clicables! So far the game seems fun. I'm really liking the Klingons. But I do find it a bit.. odd that the Romulans could possibly get allied with both the klingons and the feds.. Don't really care though! The Rommies seem fun as far as I've gotten.

Anyone got any tips, pointers that newbs might not know and should learn?

Weird glitch on the Romulan side I didn't notice on my first go through: Dewa III (New Romulus Mission). Waterfall when you start up the hill to make the turn back towards the ruins and bridge. Walked through the waterfall and saw this on the other side:

The future!

Silly question. Is this game worth playing ? I know it's a subjective thing, but I want more Trek, and the only games I have are Armada and Armada II.

EDIT: Correction. I have Legacy on XBox 360.

And the long answer ?

I've never gotten into online gaming because pvp pisses me off. I prefer playing on my own or coop. So I don't know if this is for me.

You don't have to PvP. There are sanctioned PvP zones that you can avoid entirely. Outside of them, no one can just attack you. There are co-op options, so you can easily play with your friends, or the TrekBBS fleet.

Anyway, to the long answer:

Star Trek Online has become a lot of fun. That's not to say it was actually boring, but with this latest update that creates a Romulan faction, it is just a blast to play. You can now play as a Federation, Klingon, or Romulan faction. That's a lot of choices. There are dozens of races to choose from, and hundreds more you can create on your own. You can choose the types of ships you want to fly, and you get your own command crew to rename, customize, decide how you want.

There are a lot of places to travel, both around space, and planetside. The graphics for the game look very good, and some of the newer environments are just so nice and polished (check out Hathon, when you warp to Bajor. It has a day and night cycle).

You can loadout your ships with different weapons, shields, engine, console combinations. Seriously, the game is quite a bit of fun if you like Star Trek, and even if you don't. The latest interface upgrade makes the whole system look very Trekkish, and I have to say I like it more than the previous one.

I do recommend giving it a try. It's free, and you don't need to pay anything to rise from the lowest ranking to the highest.

Currently, PvP is totally optional and a very very minor part of STO. There are only a handful of PvP maps out of the hundreds of places to go. In fact, I haven't touched the pvp aspect of STO for months and I don't miss a thing.

The game itself is largely split into two parts, the level-up game and end-game. The leveling up portion of is filled with story missions that is usually played by yourself although you can also invite friends to play with you. Right now Romulan players would probably have the most fun as all their missions are not only brand new, the missions are also some of the most creative, interesting and challenging that Cryptic has come up with.

Beyond level 40 and especially when you hit level 50, the game transitions to a mostly co-op game with lots of Fleet Actions, Special Task Force missions that are much harder and you have to play with a group of players to complete specific tasks.

You will level up very quickly in STO. Really active players can reach max level (50) in a day or two. Casual players would take at most a week or two to reach level 50.

So don't spend any cash or even in-game credits on rare or expensive stuff while you're levelling up because you'll very quickly out-level them. Personally, I just buy a bunch of cheap common gear and sell them once I out-level them. This is especially true of the C-Store ships. Don't buy any ships from the C-Store until you've reached level 50.

On the topic of the C-Store: You don't need to use real cash to get Zen. Just play events or mine dilithium and sell it on the exchange. Every C-Store transaction I've done, I've done through exchanging dil' for Z.

Re: Star Trek Online Discussion Thread (now free to play!)

Something I was thinking about as I was running around in Guild Wars (1) last night: Why haven't we seen any licensed fiction---beyond "The Needs Of The Many"--set inside the STO universe? Comics, novellas, hell even an audio-drama series. The world building is largely there, it could be sold as e-books/comics. Seems like they're missing out.

There may be licensing issues

I can also imagine some execs may believe there's an issue that readers might get 'confused' between having 3 possible 'timelines' to be reading:

1) The current novels that are already being written (Pocket Books I think?)

2) The novels (few though they are) set in the JJTrek universe

3) Any novels set in the STO continuity.

Re: Star Trek Online Discussion Thread (now free to play!)

I have found one big, big thing wrong with the Romulan content:

You only realistically have one ship to choose from when you rank up. It's really grating having to go from a Mogai (basically an escort) to a D'deridex (a whale). That sort of play-style shift is just too much, especially for a new player. They throw you a bone with the T3 ship from the anniversary mission, but otherwise you are stuck. Sure, you could pay the still-freaking-ridiculous dil prices for the allied faction, but there is basically no chance of having that much dil before lvl 50; and at any rate, that much dil could get you A LOT of zen/rep/whatever.
