so Roddenberry could talk Miss India into shaving her hair

but he couldnt talk Doohan to shave that moustache?

That was an obvious and avoidable visual continuity break I think. I'm serious. 10 years of ageing for the actors and all the prduction value added to TMP related to the series, I couldn't recognize Scotty in the movie. I was like, who's that guy?

In comparision, McCoy had a beard and shaved it for military duty.

There was nothing wrong with the moustache.

If that was Star Trek II where they were acknowledging ageing and etc., and Scotty was a main not supporting character, but in TMP that moustache was a sore thumb.

They should CGI it away. I'm not kidding.

The moustache never bothered me. People have moustaches in real life, and I doubt that it would be against any military rules whatsoever.

Scotty's moustache was actually mooted for Filmation's TAS, possibly inspired by Doohan because he had grown one after TOS. There are preliminary sketches of Scotty, when he was to lead a group of Academy cadets, where he had a moustache (far right). This was long before TMP.

When TAS came to fruition, it was Mr Kyle who got the moustache (below, far left). He kept it for ST II and even added a goatee.

One can wear a mustache in Starfleet.

You may not be kidding, but you're being ridiculous.

Didn't bother me. I mean, people grow mustaches and shave them off sometimes. Rumor has it people even change their hairstyles sometimes--even in the 23rd century.

No problems with Scotty growing a moustache, and his increase in girth between the first two films actually supports the canon timeline's assertion that the films take place over a decade apart....

Simon Pegg should grow one too.

An aside: I remain puzzled by the growing use of the term "facial hair" as opposed beard, mustache, whiskers, sideburns, etc. "Facial hair" strikes me as something that originated in cosmetic industry ads aimed at women: "removes unwanted facial hair".
