Re: STID "tracking" for $85-90 million opening [U.S. box office]

BTW, here's the odd thing. This movie is getting strong, positive reaction on social media across the board. I think that bodes well for WOM sales into the 2nd and 3rd weeks of release. IOW, Trek may have long term legs that we can't see right now simply because of what one person tells another about the acting in the movie, setting the plot aside.

I can't believe the low numbers! STID was a very good movie and deserved to do better. But Paramount will consider this a disappointment and very likely not do a sequel at this point.

They may do a sequel or go with a different team. But I think they will keep the budget the same or roll it back to where it has to be more creative with less money. Worked well in ST:TWOK and ST:TVH.

It will get a sequel, it's a disappointment but not a disastrous flop and they'll take heart from the hopeful OS takings.

Foreign numbers are the real wildcard here and it'll be a while before we fully know how they play out given the staggered international release.

Nothing reminds me that we live in an instant generation than seeing this kind of thing. Now I have nothing against anyone here, but foretellings of doom when the opening weekend isn't even over, saying it's a disappointment, that they might not get a sequel, is just, it's too soon. There hasn't been time for anything to happen.

On the bright side, it's already made more dinero than Nemesis did in its entire run

I mean there is nothing in STID promotional materials that shouts to me it'll appeal to the teen and kids It's still Star Trek.
Who was lining the red carpet at the world premiere of STiD in Sydney? A few older fans in full Star Trek costume (the rest had scrounged tickets in online contests) and groups of screaming and squealing teen girls, dressed to the nines, in hopes of catching the eye of Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban and JJ Abrams to take selfies on their iPhones. And other teens holding up banners professing undying devotion to Benedict Cumberbatch.

And now you really regret buying that damned orchard.

It's a good movie (great critical scores from aggregate sites), but the very vocal few who are bashing it could be hurting it. I've read several comments where people reading a review decided not to see it just based on that one bad review (dumb, IMO). Really hope it's a slow earner like The Hobbit.

I wish people would make their own minds up and go see it, not base their opinions on the reviews of others.

I would have thought there'd be a shedload of Cumberbatchers who would come along to this movie , despite no prior interest in Star Trek. Indeed, I've read a lot of Facebook comments from people saying Cumberbatch is the only reason they'd be seen dead at a ST film.

Yes, the Hobbit was a slow achiever. But it eventually got to a billion dollars. I'm not saying Trek will ever make that kind of money, but we shall wait and see what happens. It isn't even out everywhere, until August.

Slow achievers are much more common in December than in May. But the foreign numbers have been very good so far. Let's hope that continues.

I think there will be a sequel but it'll likely be moved to December where Star Trek belongs anyway. They may hire a new creative team and drop Bad Robot for the next one.
