What did Kruge's dog die of?

Boom, the Bird of Prey was torpedoed. So what? Nobody else got hurt. There was some shaking, the ship did a 360 deg turn -- and that was all. No hole in the hull for air to escape or radiation come it.

But the dog died. Perhaps he bumped his head too hard on Kruge's throne?

Electrocuted - the torpedo hit apparently caused a power overload. There were sparks near Kruge's chair and his "pet" shivered like he was being zapped...

cut scene:
"Klingon bastard, you killed my son!"
"and you killed my dog!"

(it's hard to joke about this scene. I strongly disagree with anybody that say Shatner isn't a great actor)

It's a Targ, yeah, but it is the analog of a dog.

It's not a Targ. The targ was invented afterwards and looks nothing like this animal, nor it has any reason to.

"Violent buffeting" triggered the regeneration of the Sixth into the Seventh Doctor in Doctor Who, so perhaps it's also lethal to Klingon targs.

Re: What did Kruge's dog die of?

When the Enterprise hit the BoP with the torpedo, the explosion popped open the compartment in Kruge's command chair where he kept his Klingon chocolate bars. The dog ate a BaBy R'u-th and suddenly keeled over dead.

The dog died from the sheer heat and destruction that made itself into the bridge from those torpedoes. The reason why Kruge and his crew survived is because they were that hard, and it was 1980's after all.

Because the puppeteer went on an unscheduled coffee break mid-scene.

Klingons, armored. Puppy, not so much. I'm down with electrocution; more than likely the average Klingon boot is insulated against such things, at least as much as the average modern work boot of today.

Looking at the script though, the means the targ met his maker (do all targs go to Sto'vo'kor?) was not specified. Just dead. Probably Nimoy made some decisions between final draft and shooting day to visualize this event.
