Re: STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS - Grading & Discussion [SPOILERS]

I gotta ask, i wasn't on this board in 09 when the last one came out obviuosly, but was the hate this hard back then as it is now?

Some things I'm reading really do sound lke "Get off my lawn, that's too damned loud!"

It was probably worse because there were way more plotholes in that.

I think the A.O. Scott review in The New York Times is the first I've read good or bad that takes be aback. He's a very respected reviewer, but one wonders if even this review is bad just because it's not the kind of movie he wanted to see. I think he's too professional to do that, but there are elements of it in the review, especially his dislike of the militarization of Starfleet and that he wishes the movie had the "wit and sincerity" of the old series (again romaticizing the past).
His "rotten" reviews at Rotten Tomatoes start at 2.5 of 5 stars. He thinks STID is that bad? Anyway, this one surprised me kind of like the Roger Ebert review of ST09 did.

Link:

http://movies.nytimes.com/2013/05/16...anted=all&_r=1&
"It’s uninspired hackwork, and the frequent appearance of blue lens flares does not make this movie any more of a personal statement. " I thought they were significantly reduced. Were they in 98% of the shots for ST:09?

" “Star Trek Into Darkness” does not quite stand by itself as a satisfying movie, but then again it doesn’t need to. It is the leg of a journey that has, remarkably, lasted for nearly half a century. I hope we never tire of Kirk, Spock and the others. I also hope that they stick around long enough to find a new civilization, since the one we have now does not fully appreciate their gifts."
Yeah. His first remark is a little harsh. His second remark is problematic and seems to be aimed at the writers. Although I have nothing against the writers, it does seem the writing and story get the bulk of the negative remarks, even in the good reviews. So, there's at least a feeling by more than a few that the writing is the movie's weakest link, relatively speaking.
I won't comment on that until I see it on Friday. But all along, my only fear has been that it's a story that's all over the place and it falls apart on itself. Some seem to think it is (even in good reviews). To be fair, it is as good a premise for a story as any previous Trek movie has had, and I had no problem with the writing in ST09. I doubt I'll walk out and ask for a refund.

Plot holes large enough to swallow up JJPrise.

It was way worse back in 09.
There were a few other posters around, that are no longer among us and who were really "fun", vocal and hardcore in their dislike.

There were fans who said the 09 movie would be a disaster and not make any money. LOL So now that they don't have that to rely on, they'll try just about anything to pick it apart. Let's face it, even with non-ST fans no one is going to like everything.

I never said they weren't, but clearly I'm not the only one with this opinion.
So what?

If you think that counting heads/opinions matters, I'll have to note that you're part of a small minority.

I recall people saying stuff like that when VOY and then ENT were impending.

Enterprise was actually a lot of the same complaints looking back (I was only around for S1 before it killed my enthusiasm for Trek), but it was also actually a pretty terrible series anyway. But I remember the complaining about getting to Kronos too quickly, the ship being too advanced and big, disrespectful to established canon, rehash etc etc

I know that if they made a new Trek series we would hear the same nitpicking.

Doubt it. However, if my wife and daughters think it stinks, I'll probably have to find a way to give them back the two hours they lost by being dragged to a chick flick. Which means it will actually cost me money it's really bad. (OH GOD I HOPE THIS MOVIE IS GOOD.)

Star Trek never rehashed their own stories before now (actually even '09 isn't a rehash, but STID clearly is).
Ummm, I recall fans complaining that ST:TMP was merely a rehash of "The Changeling". Many called it "Where Nomad Has Gone Before." It helped me that I'd never seen "The Changeling" before December 1979.

When ST IV began, on opening night, I heard people yelling "Not another probe already!"

Did not people complain the ST V's journey to the centre of the galaxy and meeting God was too much like the TAS episode where they journeyed to the centre of the galaxy and meet the Devil?

Wasn't "Nemesis" branded a ST II beat-by-beat rip-off?

Just got back from seeing it. It was entertaining - but it's fading from my memory fast. I really don't understand why they bothered making Cumberbatch Khan. He's such an underdeveloped villain in this that it really could have been anyone. Almost a carbon copy of Nero in many ways.

Also - definitely see it in 2D. I went for 3D and it was almost unwatchable on a few occassions.

Maybe there isn't an original thought left in the franchise, after all.

This seems to be a common problem with Trek movies. Almost all the villains suck.
