Is it explained how Starfleet found Khan or did they just happen across him randomly?
Yes, although I wish they had explained it slightly different, through the Kelvin's destruction.
INTO DARKNESS takes place one year after STAR TREK. So, within one year they found Khan, revived him, introduced him to the technology of the 23rd century, let him develop all kind of super-secret programs and build the Vengance within what... less than a few months?
Is it stated specifically that it was within that timeframe?
Khan said he was woken up a year earlier.
Thats interesting as it means that Kirk was probably captain of the Enterprise for more than a year before demotion.

Saw it for the second time again. Still loved it. What's wrong with me?
Still can't work out the pips.

Re: STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS - Grading & Discussion [SPOILERS]

The shoulder pips = ENT rank pips (which are simplified compared to TNG ones, with no half-pips). Sleeve stripes = TOS sleeve stripes. At least, that was my impression.

I noticed that Kirk wore a unique badge on his dress uniform - one identical to the one Admiral Kirk wore in The Motion Picture. The Admirals had a similar-but-different version (gold and stylized), and everyone else wore plain silver arrowheads.

Perhaps the uniform, badge and pips combine to give an extremely detailed account of one's rank and service history, if examined closely enough

Did they have Lt. Commanders in ENT and how many pips?

Re: STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS - Grading & Discussion [SPOILERS]

I just came back from watching the movie.. Very impressed by it! Its basically an indirect rehash of The Wrath of Khan but with some nice unique differences to make it different. I thought it was executed really well. Good movie, but of course its not without its flaws and plot holes.

I just hope the third movie will be a movie with some originality whereby the crew will be on their own to explore, instead of relying on plots and villains from the Trek movies of the past...

This review here is actually pretty well written and I can't help but agree with some of the points the reviewer mentioned.... >>> http://badassdigest.com/2013/05/14/s...poiler-review/

Once again, if our barometer for success is going to be box office results and "mainstream critics", then J.J.'s "Star Trek: Transformers" will always be out ahead.
My "barometer for success" is very complex:
  1. Whether I like it;
  2. Whether people whose company I enjoy like it.

Re: STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS - Grading & Discussion [SPOILERS]

The only point I agree with in that review is that the pace is perhaps a bit too break neck, there are interesting points brought up which ultimately don't get that much attention because of how fast the movie goes.

Personally I think the best movies are the ones where they draw inspiration from the series and canon.

I don't think they did, the ranks were simpler - ensign/lieutenant/commander/captain.
I can just about imagine them rounding down to two pips for Lt. Cmdr. Scott. Commander Spock had three and Captain Kirk (who hadn't yet had time to alter his dress uniform after his demotion) had four.

In the 3rd movie, Kruge will try to steal the secrets of transwarp beaming and magic blood.

Hahaha! I'm thinking though since this is an indirect remake of TWOK, imagine a remake of The Voyage Home with a touch of JJ Abrams..hmmm...

Didn't Picard have magic blood too?
Didn't Shinzon want it so that he could live?
Hey the blood thing is a nod to NEM.

At least we get to see a new BOP. And Maybe JJ Prise will be ditched and we'll get something better. Wait, I don't want to see their attempt at modernizing the Refitted Constitution class.

The Enterprise was refitted at the end of the movie.
