So that article is basically saying that the non-stop action and the reduction in "Trekkiness" (I haven't seen the movie, so this is hearsay) is because of the studio listening to audience gripes about Trek in global market polls and wanting TDK numbers for this movie?
Yes. They want to make a movie that people will actually like and will justify them spending $10.00 on a ticket, unlike the old guard.
Only $10? Geez, I think pensioners here have to pay more than that.

Seriously, I don't know whether to laugh or cry at that.
Except, the truth is the polar opposite - there's a palpable increase in Trekiness.

I paid $26.50 for each adult and $23.50 for each child (X3) for IMAX 3D

That's the new Starfleet, ladies and gentledudes. Cadets become Captains, and navigator ensigns become chief engineers.
Geordi became Chief Engineer in TNG without seeming to know anything about engineering (being sent down there or offering suggestions in Season 1). And not only that he was an expert from the get-go.
At least Ensign Chekov had problems there.
I don't disagree that Geordi's rank was an issue (he was a lieutenant and the assistant chiefs in season one had all been lt-commanders so we never saw one of those assistant chiefs again). However, there were references in season one to imply had engineering training, he was already a lt(jg) before being promoted, he was older, and there was never any express suggestion that he was positioned at the helm straight out of the Academy (in fact Memory Alpha confirms he was 12 years older than Chekov and the Enterprise was his second posting so if anything he'd spent a long time before getting promoted).

O'Brien's retconned rank was a blatant retcon but I'm glad they did - I get fed up only seeing senior officers and his history was all over the place (he'd been helmsman, engineer, tactical, and transporters) but he was on a non-Federation vessel with non-federation personnel and was vastly experienced. He would not have become a chief engineer on a starship but could get away with it on a small ship with few officers like the Defiant.

LOL. Syfy is showing Generations now, then Insurrection, then Nemesis.

I am just sitting here, shaking my head at Syfy. Some programmer in there must, MUST have a seriously twisted sense of humor. If ever there were a bigger chasm between what was needed and what we got during those TNG-era-movie years... this was pretty much it.
Sorry, but I have to disagree here. The four TNG films WERE as much TNG as the series, and I could not think of better or other adventures for Picard's crew. Why the bashing... it is so 90ies. Move on already.

This is one of my pet peeves with TNG - Geordi's sudden rise to Engineering genius. Considering the dolts TNG had in engineering in Season 1, I had no problem with Picard transferring someone anyone to engineering. But why didn't Geordi help with the problems they had in Season 1, why didn't he take over?

I thought Geordi quite clever and capable in Season 1 but they might as well as made him a doctor to replace Beverley in Season 2 as for all the engineering prowess that I saw. Although I'm happy to be proved wrong.

Instead suddenly he was there in season 2, technoblabbing all over the place like he knew everything but kept it to himself in Season 1. Instead Wesley had to save the day again and again.

My TNG friend says forget Season 1 ever occurred and you'll be better off. I wish I could see in Season 1 where Geordi was even interested in Engineering. Then I'd like TNG better

Sorry, TNG, with but a few exceptions, hasn't aged well for me. I'll just let it rest at that.

TNG movies were glorified TV episodes. They did nothing and looked no better than what people could watch on DS9 and VOY for free on TV. Most times, the TV shows were better.

Re: STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS - Grading & Discussion [SPOILERS]

I thought the film was fantastic, better than the 2009 film which was a tough one to follow. I felt the standard of writing and acting was high I wish more films could handle the characters this well. It wasn't just a revenge story as feared, I liked the moral implication. It examined what Star Fleet was about a lot better than Star Trek Insurrection did.

The only disapointment was that there was no scene of Kirk sat in the captains chair with tribbles on his head and tribbles covering the bridge.

I thought the tribble scene would show an extra two tribbles instead of the tribble just reviving

You know damn well they won't, and even if they do, it'll be like working on a ranch: bullshit, more shit, piled high and deep.

Impressive that you're capable of anticipating all possible future outcomes from there, you probably need to change your posting location to Mt Olympus.
