"Is Battlestar Galactica in Suspended Animation?"

From io9.com: Is Battlestar Galactica in Suspended Animation?

I think maybe it *needs* a rest. It's WAY TOO SOON for another reboot - and nuBSG hasn't had much luck with spin-off's. (Though I really liked both "Caprica" and "Blood & Chrome" - but both were...flawed.) And a sequel would be...well...possible - but it would either be a planet-based primative survuval show...or a futuristic Earth-human-based version of either "Caprica" or "Blood & Chome", only about *us*...our future.

Yeah, BSG is really not a good format for spin offs. It would have to be rebooted again in the future. It's definety on hold as a TV product, much like Stargate.

Re: "Is Battlestar Galactica in Suspended Animation?"

In my view the only way to continue BSG with any connection to either the original or Moore's version is to jump fully into the "cycle of time" concept introduced in NuBSG. The finale insinuated that this 'experiment' is ongoing in the galaxy orchestrated by whatever entities mortals believe to be gods. Technically an infinite number of Galactica stories could play out, with only subtle connections to previous iterations of the cycle of humanity vs synthetic life.

If there was to be any ongoing plot between them it would have to be meta. Such as hints to the greater purpose that the people of each cycle discover before their inevitable end. I don't think it works so well to try various spin-offs and side stories set within any one cycle. The core story of Battlestar Galactica is kind of limited in flexibility - it's about the last surviving ship of a civilization leading survivors to a promised land. Any side-stories have to service that premise and can't really go off on their own.

If you were going to change that, it'd have to be right from the start. I.e. one of the cycles of time would have to play out entirely differently and not be about a genocide, etc.

Did anyone think this Singer project was going to happen?

The battlestar in Eric Chu's concept art looks like a Romulan warbird-class ship that would fit in with the Trek universe.

You can totally do a far future setting where the descendants of the Redstripe Centurions have been nearly wiped out by their rebellious creations, the humans, and are searching for their brethren on a mythical planet called Earth.

That's awful and pointlessly derivative.

The original didn't either. But at least the remake got to finish their story.

They ought to leave it alone, Nu-BSG was as close to perfect as sci fi gets for me, the franchise doesn't need further milking.

Re: "Is Battlestar Galactica in Suspended Animation?"

The new BattleStar Galactica was a 9/11 series. The further 9/11 recedes in time, the less significant the series. In the end the series can only be remembered for its dramatic merits, which are pretty much nonexistent. Losing the war against Iraq derailed the series even as it was broadcast.
Its only chances of revival lie in another 9/11.

It's over.

Not everything needs a sequel/prequel/remake.

Still confused at why the BSG forum is still open.

Best to let it rest. Is there a compelling reason to do more ther than just to do more?

There are pretty-much three options for more BSG:

1) Re-boot/re-imagine. Too soon since the last version.

2) Direct sequel/prequel to the RDM version. Been tried with Caprica and Blood and Chrome. Doesn't seem to have taken to well.

3) Direct continuation with BSG:TOS ala the Richard Hatch vision. Might work, if only on a nostalgia basis, but could it be sustained? Can it it be done post-BSG2003 without looking dated and silly?

There's a (limited) market for a 'wrap up' of the original series, bringing it to a definite conclusion. I'd suggest a TV movie or miniseries.

I'd take the footage of Lorne Greene from Galactica '80 and construct it around that - with sparing use, CGI and stand-ins it could be done. The DS9 tribbles episode was fantastic, and that was years ago - it must have got cheaper by now !

If by any miracle it was a huge hit, they could try a spinoff. How about Apollo and Starbuck - The Twilight Years...

Don't think you would need to ressurect Greene. Just let Hatch loose with his BSG: The Second Coming (I think that's what he was calling it) concept. Hatch (and whomever else you can find from the original) in supporting roles with a new, younger cast moving to the foreground of the story.

Killing Greene off screen would be a cheap shot - that's how its always done 'between seasons'. This way you would see Adama get some resoloution with a conclusion to both the main story arc and/or his.
