Re: STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS - Grading & Discussion [SPOILERS]

Hello Everyone

I´ve seen the movie about 3 hrs ago "Preview-Premiere", here in Germany in Düsseldorf. I was very exited, because this was an english version of it. It´s very important to see this one firstly original dubbed, because of the heart and soul the actors given to the characters.

And you know what, this movie was awesome!!!!

I liked Uhura in Into Darkness, she had a key-role this time and it was very well played.

Thank you Zoe!!!!

Benedict Cumberbatch --> stop being sherlock, stay KNS ;-), in every movie now
It was very fun, surprisingly emotional and full of action.
The new "going to warp" effect was an eye-candy as well as the "not to little-not to much" 3D

Everyone who isn´t a Trek-Fan and says "na this isn´t mine" should see this movie, cause, jj did an amazing job to give us a new very good enjoyalbe scifi to remember.

Besides of many Trek-ish hints that felt between Star Trek (1979) and Star Trek 10 (Seatbels) i would give this movie a 10/10

I´m almost afraid to watch STID in german, but i have to at least a dozen

Have a good time

Greetings

Besides: I liked the "ill-child-music" in the 10 min preview more, than the "London-theme" in the actual movie. Don´t you think so too?

well that certainly wasn't much to go on . of the dozen's of reviews i've read so far (good or bad) that has to be the most lightweight of them all.
Yeah, they've been around a long, long time (1986 -) and when they are dealing with sequels they tend to review in shorthand.

To me, the most suprising "twist" of the movie was that they almost turned Khan into some kind of anti-hero.

From a certain POV he had legitimate reasons for the London bombing and the attack on Starfleet headquarters. I would also point out that Khan had fully cooperated with Kirk and his crew... up until the moment when Kirk ordered Scotty to shoot him. That's the moment when Khan turned on Kirk. Khan probably figured that Kirk must be another Starfleet scumbag just like Admiral Marcus was.

Re: STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS - Grading & Discussion [SPOILERS]

Went to see the new Trek movie - but WTF did i just see? Unfortuntely, I do not mean that in a good way...

If you´re not a Trek fan you will probably like the movie - it´s more or less nonstop action that makes more or sometimes less sense. Pretty much like the first movie, just with even less Star Trek in it.

The visuals are extremely well done, as one would expect - with two exceptions. One the hillarious brewe.... aehm engine room and various other "sets", that either looks like it was filmed at Cern or in the server room of a big company.
The contrast between this and the stylish bridge and corridors is just unbelievable. The other one is that ugly big ship. It´s 2 or 3 times bigger then the E, and they reason that because it needs only a skeleton crew. What????? Did I mention it´s ugly?

Then there are our heros - the main focus is on Kirk/Spock, which is fine. Bones on the other hand has basically nothing to do in this movie and just delivers some banter with Spock (which is nicely done). Uhura and Sulu each get their nice piece of the action, Scotty has a little more to do but is pretty much out of character - and Chekov has to be the clown again. I feel sorry for the kid!

Fortunately, they did not have the big scientific nonsense bugs they had in the first movie - but that intergalactic phonecall and Khans transbeam-whatever surely counts in my book.

I enjoyed the first half of the movie quite a lot - it has a nice story, some nice action, good character interaction, drama. But then it gets deep down into darkness and never comes back. I still can´t believe what I´ve seen in the second half. It is just wrong and lazy to me. I can´t believe they copied trek 2 almost word for word, scene for scene... I feel insulted.

In the end, Kirk gives the nice opening speech of the classic series - and THAT is what I want to see - explore strange new worlds, not muddle in all-to-well known territory. I want to feel the sense of wonder in the cinema, not rush from one action sequence to the next, no matter how well they are done. Leave that to that other "Star" franchise. Unfortunately, I seem to be in the minority.

Very disappointed...

Wow, I was really prepared to like this, but coming out of the theater just now I can't help but think: What a waste of time! I was a fan of the first movie, but sadly this didn't do it for me. Great effects, neat production design, fine music – that's all this film has going for it. But man, what a muddled, dumb plot! What terrible dialog! And what weak performances. Even Cumberbatch couldn't save this one. I kept rolling my eyes because of all the rehashed dialog and plot points from earlier Trek movies. And when Spock shed a tear and screamed 'Khaaaan!' I didn't know whether to laugh or cry. For some reason it really bugged me this time – as opposed to the last movie – that they refuse to portray Kirk, Spock & Co. as professionals. I mean, come on, Uhura and Spock are arguing about relationship stuff while on a dangerous mission? Seriously?!

I'm sorry, but I'm rather disappointed by this. All the preview material let me think I would like this.

You sound like me coming out of Iron Man 3, my wife turned to me and asked how I liked it, and i just didnt know. Great effects, great music, etc, but wow what a boring mess of Downy trying to get out of the franchise.

Pretty negative review from today's Age, though their Sunday review was much more positive.

Another paper today gives it 3.5 stars, saying that Cumberbatch deserved better and more coherent material but it's an impressive action/ bromance film.

Am i the only one who thinks the 08 writers strike actually helped Trek 09 because the script was locked and they werent allowed to go back and muck it up.

I really want this to be good. But why cant Trek writers come up with something new. All the TNG movies were a bunch of madmen with a super weapon that Picard had to stop before the Countodwn reached zero.

Then we rebooted and we are getting Wrath of Khan

I just came home from from the cinema, so I couldn't possibly read through the whole thread ... but has anyone mentioned yet that the opening scene has changed from the nine minute preview? The movie now starts with the Nibiru stuff and then changes to the family with the sick daughter.

And Joseph Gatt's character is now called "Science Officer 0718".

Re: STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS - Grading & Discussion [SPOILERS]

just got back from seeing the film.

probably the best trek film ever. excellent story. lots of action. plenty of plot.

also liked how scotty had gained usefulness to go with the comedy. and enough nods to old trek without causing a stiff neck.

pretty much all the rumours and speculation i heard beforehand were completely wrong. (anyone remember the speculation that alice eve was some kind of space colonist, based on that image of her on a planet wearing a jumpsuit?) cumberbatch's characters identity pretty much came as a twist due to multiple false spoilers "he's definitely gary mitchell!" "no my source tells me he's garth of izar" "he's too white to play a hispanic indian!"

most people who will dislike it are those people who irrationally hate anything that isn't 'old' trek (you remember, the trek that everyone liked so much they stopped watching)

anyone else think the walkway across the shaft was from that dodgy total recall remake?

very very good!!
