I used to just leave dry food out all the time but he started getting kind of fatty so I've just started my cat on a diet. I'm going to see what happens over the next few weeks and adjust based on that, plus a visit to the vet at some point.
I do the same. Luckily, my cat is such a spoiled princess that once she eats from a bowl, she won't go back and eat from the same bowl unless I put brand new food in it.
Seriously? Wow. Mine is so low-maintenance compared to a lot of cats, I think. He's a real trooper about the litterbox too, which is very appreciated.

Oh yes. I'm not even allowed to start my day until I turn on the faucet in the bathroom so that she can have her morning drink.

I once changed food on her from the orange bag of Friskies to the purple bag of Friskies, and she repaid me by peeing on all of my furniture for 3 weeks until I figured out what I did wrong.

The canned food has more protein than dry so you can feed them more. The dry is full of carbs and fillers it is worse for the cat. That said we have 3 cats, 2 that are at or below ideal weight and 1 porker. When you have multiple cats it is hard to regulate what they eat. 2 of ours graze while the porker scarfs the food down and then checks the other bowls.

I measure out the appropriate amount of dry food for my cats once a day and that's all they get until the same time next day.

When Casey was around, she would let me know when she was hungry. She would insist on her canned food some days, but other days wanted nothing but her dry food. Toward the end, she didn't eat quite as much as she had when I'd started her on her thyroid meds.

Our Phantom, in a rare calm moment. Yeah, he's not fooling anyone, especially the fish!

^Nice photo. I love black kitties with their eyes closed!

I feed my two cats Evo -- I think it's the only dry food that doesn't contain grain. But even with that, I don't feed them nearly as much as the bag says. And I give them a set amount twice a day.

I just keep the bowl filled. The damned beagle always finds a way to climb and eat the cat's food

^ That reminds me of when Casey was little and we had a standard poodle named Annabelle. Annabelle would clean up what Casey hadn't eaten. I'd find a can of cat food in the living room!

I'm pretty sure beagles can fly, or at least levitate.

(But only when no one's looking.)

Toby is super cute Spot's Meow! He is one comfy looking kitty!

(edit to add that is a great shot of Phantom with the fish B.J.! I wish I could trust Jack like that...but the poor fish would be food in the blink of an eye!)

Rory likes Parmesan cheese. I let him have a few shreds while I was grating some yesterday.

It's the only people food he likes. Otherwise, he'll only eat Iams.

Re: Feline Follies

You reminded me of a cute lil' incident. During the mid 80s, I'd drive my grandmother to visit her older sister in the country. My great-aunt's daughter who cared for her catatonic mother started letting one of the more people friendly barnyard cats enter the kitchen. During one visit I snacked upon some potato chips and the ebony feline keenly stared at me. Jokingly, I held out a chip and said, "What? You want one?" The cat leaned forward and bit a perfect semi-circle from the salted snack. He didn't lunge. It was simply purposeful and calculated. I stared at the cartoon styled notch in the chip and decided, "Eh, I don't think I'll finish this. Here, you take it."

My exposure to cats before those visits had been limited, so I didn't expect a feline would want something that was not meat. Little did I understand that cats, and many other animals are opportunists. They're not going to fret over the nutritional value of an item. If it can be swallowed, some animal will eat it.

Sincerely,

Bill

Re: Feline Follies

I haven't posted pictures of my cats for almost a year, and they were kittens then. So I found them like this a few hours ago and decided that pictures were obligatory (sorry for the massive size):
Inkie on the right and Penny on the left.

More Inkie:

Yes, I struggle to tell them apart.
They're sisters from the same litter, probably identical twin cats. I can just about tell which is which because their fur is ever so slightly different and I think their eyes are slightly different shades.
