This is the sort of thing I was thinking of, designed by Matt Jefferies himself:

http://www.projectrho.com/SSC/Pegasus03.jpg

It has some of the "lifting body" look about it while retaining a link to the "rocket look" of your Valiant.

A view showing the rear details:

Hmm. Not hugely different from the revised idea I have in mind. I think the crew needs something larger though. If you don't have transporters and you might be going down to some surfaces for survey then you need to be able to bring your equipment and supplies with you because you can't conveniently beam stuff up and down.

Yeah, I agree. I'd think that as a Valiant shuttle it would be scaled up, if for no other reason than the earlier technology might take more room than say, Galileo.

The big engine at the back of the Valiant isn't a rocket engine in the conventional sense. It's one of the early forms of impulse (which possibly came into use around TOS' 2018) but on a big scale in relation to the rest of the ship.
Kind of like the 'Mystery Ship' from ENT's opening credits (the one that appears right before the Phoenix)?

^^ I have no idea since I'm not that familiar with ENT's sense of tech. The series essentially doesn't register with me.

I've been thinking about this and the landing craft is something I'm going to set aside for awhile to move on (or back) to other things. The Valiant was the main thing and I pushed it farther than I had originally planned.

I think he means that you repeated "becomes" and ended the sentence with a comma instead of a period.

I actually got an idea for one of these ships using the ring idea you have here, but it also includes the warp nacelles. Explanation to come later as I'm tired and it's late here.
