He is a tabletop gamer. The Wild Cards series came out of a tabletop game he played with some of the other authors of the series.

Not a video gamer though.

I myself never even played the games in question but I knew the term, I thought maybe there might be some connection as it's rather distinctive. We know the books come out slowly and Final Fantasy takes a long time to play...
