I can already see it. Cruise and a guy in a gorilla costume, dancing on a couch!

It's being reported that Tom Cruise is Napoleon Solo and Armie Hammer is Illya Kuryakin.

He's a bit young for it, but I'd rather see Anton Yelchin as Illya. He's actually Russian by birth, and is a very good actor.

Of course, a modern movie needs a female lead. I wonder if they'll include April Dancer, The Girl from U.N.C.L.E.

I'm surprised that they've opted for someone so much younger than Tom. But, even more so, I'm surprised that they've opted for someone so much TALLER than Tom! There's a good 10 inches between the two - 5'7" versus 6'5". The poster is going to look like Arnie and Danny DeVito in Twins!

Hollywood has been disguising actors' and actresses' relative heights for generations. Although it's true that one of the main ways they've done that was with selective casting.

Don't see why Cruise couldn't play the villian, i.e the head of THRUSH.

I don't think we ever saw the head of THRUSH, just the THRUSH agent of the week. Although there was one where they captured the third man from the top, I think it was.

Although of course a movie would do things differently, so they could give it a head.

And Cruise is playing the hero because they want to attract the Mission: Impossible movie audience. I doubt that The Man from U.N.C.L.E. has enough name recognition today to rely on that alone, so they want star power and some coattails to ride.

Chris Hemsworth towers over Robert Downey Jr. (who's the same height as Cruise) but it wasn't an issue in The Avengers.

if by "lead," you mean a costar with equal billing and role in the story, I'd submit very few modern action movies have a female lead. Most female parts in these films are supporting roles consisting of a damsel in distress, gal friday or eye candy.

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau is much taller than Tom Cruise and no attempt was made to hide that in Oblivion.

Just thought of another movie -- Pain and Gain. Mark Wahlberg is Tom Cruise's height, Dwayne Johnson is 6-5. Not a big deal there either.

I hope this film comes together--I love the original series (especially the far superior season one) and have been hoping for a big screen revival. David Tennant would have been my choice for Solo, but I'm sure Cruise will be just fine.

I'm working my way through season 1 now. I'm not encouraged by what I've heard about the later seasons.

Now, that's an intriguing choice. He could capture Vaughn's playful, impish quality and theatrical delivery, while also bringing some emotional depth and weight.

I don't remember saying it was a big deal. It just struck me as an amusing juxtaposition is all.

What also made it stand out to me is that unlike the other examples mentioned, Cruise is an A-list megastar; Walhberg isn't really in the same league. As for the Avengers, well, that was an emsemble group piece, with our heroes frequently off doing different things in different places, while TMFU will have two leads, presumably sharing a lot of time onscreen together. The contrast will be quite apparent.

But I guess it's to Tom's credit - quite a few egotastic movie stars would have nixed being cast opposite someone who will make them look tichy onscreen, particularly where Cruise is the big name and Hammer the up-and-comer with considerably less clout and box office appeal (as yet). As with Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol, where the studio insisted that Jeremy Renner be included as a co-lead/possible replacement, Cruise has shown that he is quite content to put the good of the movie first as oppose to his ego.
