Re: re.:Avery Brooks' acting style

I always felt he just wasn't...engaged...in first couple of seasons. Like, why the frak am I doing this? (other than a paycheck). Hence the slight monotone performances. But once he gets into it (around end S3, S4) and loosens up, he's a joy to watch, 99 per cent of time. Great cadences. Though he still does strike the odd bum note, and his Hannibal Lecter routine is just seriously creepy (and not in a good way; just makes me giggle).

Like some in the Fandom, I feel that Brooks took a long while... until S4 to get into the role. Until then, he felt, stiff and distant.

I think that was intentional. Brooks was playing Sisko as a man who was having trouble accepting his role. He was distant at first because Deep Space Nine was not where Sisko wanted to be.

I think it's more I got used to his strange delivery than that he materially changed it. I have to say his singing in S7 was cringe-makingly awful. Whoever thought that was a good idea should be shot at dawn.

Brooks is a great singer, he even released a CD:

Re: re.:Avery Brooks' acting style

I agree he was a bit stiff in the first season, and anytime he had to act really excited it came off a bit forced, but that didn't happen all that often. For the most part I thought he was fantastic, and nailed just about every line he delivered.

Although I do wish they had played up his sarcastic humor a bit more. His exchanges with Bashir in "Cardassians" crack me up every time: "Don't apologize, it's been the high point of my day" and "By all means. Will one Runabout be enough?"

Yeah, that was good stuff. It would've been nice to see more often.

I didn't much care for that scene. But I thought Vic was overused on DS9 in general, this is really just a symptom of that.

I thought Vic was way overused too, but he was the only sentient hologram in Trek I liked.

He was a hologram. He knew he was a holgram. And that was ok. He accepted his lot in 'life.' Artificial intelligence doesn't always have to be a Pinocchio.

As for Sisko's singing, I think teenage me cringed when it first aired, but I think he's pretty awesome now.

Re: re.:Avery Brooks' acting style

Errrrr.... I'm on Season 4 so I haven't gotten to Sisko singing yet.

WTF Sisko sings? I'm confuzzled.

As for sentient holograms, obviously my fave is Voyager's EMH.

I meant accidentally sentient holograms.... Vic, Moriarty, the inhabitants of Fair Haven.

I love the The Doctor, although he too did have a bit of the Pinocchio syndrome.

I loved him, but yeah he did have serious Pinocchio syndrome. It was funny though. Photons be free!

Fair Haven... ugh. I disliked those episodes only because I just couldn't stand watching Janeway date a hologram. I have nothing against holograms, especially ones who know they are holograms and accept it... but just... no.
