Cats are more fun in pairs. They have company when you're at work, as well.
I am in full agreement.
My current cat does NOT like other cats. Or dogs. Or humans. She basically only likes me. I have a roommate that my cat has lived with for the last 3 years, and she still won't go anywhere near him unless I am also in the room.

I would love to get another cat to keep her company when I'm gone, but I don't think she would want anything to do with it.

Is Junior part mackerel tabby, auntiehill? I noticed the telling M mark on his forehead. And he does look like a big healthy boy. How big is he?
I know he's a Maine Coon and I suspect part Tabby, but the owner who rescued his mother said he was full Maine Coon. Not terribly sure about that.

Back in October, he weighed about 12 pounds. Now, he's probably closer to 13 or 14. He's now about 16 months old.

I tried to measure him with a tape measure (not easy, as he kept trying to eat the tape measure) and stretched him out a bit. His body was about 26 inches. Add about another 9 or 10 inches for his tail.

I have a 21 inch monitor on my desktop, so for comparison, here's Junior sleeping on my keyboard.

Re: Feline Follies

I thought you might find this interesting in regards to the tabby discussion:

"Tabbies are so ubiquitous that many people think of them as a breed. Not so; the tabby is a color pattern - most often stripes, but sometimes stripes and whorls, or even spots and stripes. The tabby pattern is so popular that it can be found in many pedigreed cats today, and is accepted in a number of breeds by the most popular registries."

Every cat is genetically a tabby. It is the expression or suppression of various genes that indicates coat colour. Even a solid black cat is a tabby. The agouti gene is either turned off or on to hide the pattern in black cats.

When Jack was a kitten you could easily see his "ghost" tabby markings. As he aged he became solid black (although you can still see glimpses of his ghost tabby markings in bright sunlight).

Just an FYI if anyone was interested!

This is NOT Jack, but it is an illustration of what he looked like before he became "solid"

Cool.

I always thought American Tabby was a breed, but I guess it's just a coloring. Learned something new.

That's awesome! I knew that it wasn't a breed, but I didn't realize you could even see it on a black cat. Comet has typical dark tabby coloring. He's got a little bit of Maine Coon but I don't know how much. His hair is sort of a medium length, and he's definitely larger than normal cats but not huge like Junior.

Oh and he has the whorl pattern which I like.

@ auntiehill: What a gorgeous kitty! I'm not a big fan of long hair, but he's beautiful.

@RoJoHen: Is that a short hair? My cat who passed away two months ago had a similar coat. Though, his was a darker gray.

@Kestra: I'd never before seen a whorl-patterned cat until the neighbors across the court got one. I've been fascinated ever since. But its pattern isn't nearly as striking as yours'.

And here's the newest addition to the family (Indigo):

Her hair is indeed short. Beyond that, I know nothing other than she is a cat.

Jack is starting to show his age. There was a time when all of his whiskers were black...now he sports two white ones.
