Went out to the Village Thursday night for the last showin' of COaP, a Children of the Corn-ish horror film. A couple with a baby on the way are on vacation in Mexico, goin' out to an island where they find only children...and quickly learn that the kids are dangerous.

Rather good horror film, too.

Went into work early on Friday, to see The Host, the new alien invasion movie from Stephanie Meyer. It wasn't as gawd awful as I was expectin' from the woman who inflicted Twilight on the world.

Still not a great movie, but I'll be goin' to see it again with a friend of mine in a couple of days.

Went out to the Ritz tonight to see TBHS, this week's Music Monday show. It was a new 35mm print of the '78 film.

I'm fairly certain my dad would have watched this when I was younger, but I know for sure now that I have seen it. Gary Busey did a great job as Buddy Holly. And there was some good humor throughout the film. And, of course, the music...

I've got passes to see Jurassic Park 3D tomorrow. I'm hopin' it'll be on an IMAX-ish screen, since its at an AMC that has one.

Warners hit it out of the park(again) with this DDVD release of a straight up adaptation of the classic '80's graphic novel by Frank Miller.
They did seem to drop in a few nuggets. When Gordon goes to the corner store for groceries you can see a comic rack with Swamp Thing easily seen. When Bruce is trying out his exo-suit and lifts the Batmobile it seems to be the one from the '89 Burton film. Probably some others.

Both installments are just at an hour and 15min so clearly this was a cash grab to split them into two releases at $15-20 a piece. I don't blame them for that but it was plain and why I didn't buy them, I Netflixed them first.
If they release this as one set down the road in a few years I'd pay $15-20 for it that way. If they edit it onto one disc even better. It's one I would have in my library for the correct price.

Watched the second Trekkie documentary hosted by Denise Crosby. And hardcore Trekkies still scare me, now with international terror.

Followed that up with another documentary about the exploitation film industry of the Philipines in the '60s, '70s & early '80s.

And then Aisha Tyler's stand up special, which was okay.

Went out to the Drafthouse to see Wrong, which was all kinds of absurd. I followd that up with a second viewin' of The Host, because a friend of mine wanted to see it.

And Drafthouse has a "don't talk" PSA from the "Winnebago Man", so I decided to watch that documentary on Netflix when I got back from the theater the other ngiht.

And since I had the house to myself last night, I went kinda nuts with the Netflix, watchin' a mix of animation, stand up, and cheesy B movies.

Seriously, watchin' stand up specials on Netflix makes me want to stop listenin' to 102.7 here in Austin...seems like I've already heard all the best jokes while drivin' back & forth to work!

Watchin' Stolen, starrin' Nicolas Cage, on Netflix now, since I can't seem to get to sleep.

Alamo Drafthouse got the new Evil Dead and Jurassic Park 3D this week, so I'll be goin' to see those in the near future, plus some of the specialty screenings.

Twenty years ago, I was still too young to drive, so I missed out on seein' the first JP on the big screen because my dad wouldn't take me to the movie theater when it was showin'.

Saw the two sequels when they came out, but 'til today, I hadn't seen the first on anything but a tv screen.

Gotta say, I'm really glad I went, and I may go see it a couple more times while my theater has it.

The 3D conversion was very well done, and the depth of the images was incredible, and, oddly, most noticable when Hammond first shows up in the Badlands. And the truck in the tree sequence was pretty good, too.

Added bonus, a trailer for Star Trek Into Darkness in 3D before the movie! Can't wait for that one!

I also went to see GI Joe: Retaliation again, this time in 2D...the mountain sequence was quite a bit less epic, but everything else played the same to me. I may go see it again in 3D later this week, too, haven't decided yet...

I still can't take Steve Carrell seriously as an actor; I always see Michael Scott or Brick Tamland. I thought'd we'd be in trouble when Patton Oswalt and Rob Cordrry showed up in the first ten minutes, but then how awesome was the rest of the supporting cast: William Petersen! Martin Sheen! Mark Moses! And while I feel an end of the world scenario in the US would end up with a lot more burning buildings and roving gangs, I do give them credit for actually ending the world. Too many times this could've become "Oh look, the asteroid missed us, now we can be together."

Another DDVD Warners Animated film comprised of a series of 4 shorts: Crossfire, Field Test, In Darkness Dwells and Deadshot.

I'm just not a very big fan of the manga style which dominated this release. I did really like Crossfire and Deadshot, which bookended this well for me. Field Test was my least favorite and I really didn't like Wayne's look in that over the others.

Jurassic Park 3D - Theater - So the first movie I saw this year in an actual movie theater is Jurassic Park 3D. I was able to sneak out last night after the kids went to bed and the wife was home. Like many others, Jurassic Park is one of my all time favorite movies. The freshness that the 3D brings is incredible. For a movie I know inside and out, I discovered things I never noticed before. So it was almost like watching it again for the first time. I'm very envious of those who get to see JP in 3D and it's their first time seeing it. If you get a chance to see it before it leaves the theater, I highly recommend that you do.

This is actually a bit deceiving as it's not an 1hr+ animated 'film' just on the title. It's actually a compilation of 4 DC shorts with the title card being the longest of the group. It's very well done and the bulk of the short is really just a prolonged fight sequence between Supes, Marvel and Adam but it all plays well.
It also contains:
Spectre- has a soundtrack with a 70's vibe to it and Alyssa Milano as the female lead. Very well done.
Green Arrow- my least favorite of the group as it takes Dinah to bail his ass out proving how inept he can be at times.
Jonah Hex- Thomas Jane as Hex in this short about a bar mistress usurping his bounties and he's not happy about it.

Went out last Sunday to see F:AAR, a documentary about the birth & evolution of the rennie faires, from their start near Malibu, California to the expansion across the U.S. as a commercial enterprise. I enjoyed it, and since I was in the area for something else, I wore one of my DS9 uniform shirts. Most of the other folks at the screenin' were in faire garb.

Went nuts with the Netflix again.

Bobcat Golthwait's standup was pretty good.

TCoC:TM wasn't as good as I had hoped, though there was a lot of behind the scenes stuff, instead of actual stage performances.

Was curious about Dan Aykroyd's movie, so I watched it...in it, he plays a nerdy professor who is seduced into becomin' a Chicago pimp. It was pretty stupid.

And then CHUD, a horror movie about toxic waste mutants under the streets of New York...to be honest, it could have used more mutants, and less everybody else.

Got a plan to see the new Evil Dead with a friend tonight. Hope it doesn't suck.

53. My Awkward Sexual Adventure (✩✩✩✩) - Download - A guy's who's bad in bed enlists the help of a stripper to make his girlfriend jealous so that she'll take him back. It's an independent Canadian film. It doesn't have the gloss of a big budget comedy, but I found it to be quite good. It wasn't raunchy, but it had a lot of good sexual content. The lead wasn't as charismatic as he could have been but he was serviceable and played the part.

54. The Oh in Ohio (✩✩) - DVD - Some story about a bored wife who can't have an orgasm and what she does to rectify the situation. It had an all-star cast that included Paul Rudd, Parker Posey and Danny DeVito, and it had what sounded like an interesting premise, but wow! It completely and utterly fell apart 30 minutes in. The wife solved her problem pretty quickly, then the movie went off on some odd tangents. I wonder how stuff like this happens.

Got together with my friend Maeby to see the new ED movie Thursday night. For those thinkin' its a remake, sit through the credits, all the way to the end, and ya will see its a continuation.

Pretty gory, too. Maeby jumped quite a few times, and I said "eewww" more than once.

Watched Bully via Netflix Instant yesterday. It was so sad...

Went into work early to see Trance before my shift. I thought it was alright, not great, but entertainin'. I'll see pretty much anything from Danny Boyle, and Rosario Dawson was an added bonus.

And I got together with my friend Barbara to see BBB on the big screen at the Ritz this afternoon. Pretty cute musical, and Ann Margaret was a hottie back in the day...

38. Les Miserables (A+)

Wow, haven't had much time for movies lately, between rewatching Game of Thrones and studying for exams. Found time last night to watch Tom Hooper's Les Miserables, which I bought on Blu-ray a while ago. I'm still an unabashed fan of the film, which is one of the most rawly emotional films I've seen in a long time (it's also entirely unironic, which it needed to be, but I suspect rubbed some people the wrong way). The cast is terrific, and even Crowe's less-than-great singing has grown on me, though he'll never be Philip Quast.

34. Batman: Gotham Knight: B
35. Superman/Shazam: Return of Black Adam: A-
36. Batman: Year One: B

The animation is great, Warners continues to have it down in this area. Bryan Cranston as Gordon was a good fit and I didn't realize it till it was over but Eliza Dushku felt right for Selina/Catwoman as well. Where this drops off for me a lot is that as soon as I heard the voice for Wayne/Batman I did NOT feel it was right. Ben McKenzie just didn't feel like a good fit for me. When the main character isn't right I just can't give it an A grade despite enjoying the rest of it so much.

The story itself was told very true in spirit, as I recall it, to the Miller Year One story back in the late 80's. A friend of mine who watched it before I did and thought Commissioner Loeb was a nod to Jeff Loeb. I felt a bit better with my memory on that moment and told him he needed to dig out a TPB cause it's not a nod. Loeb was the actual character in the story long before Jeff came onto the DC scene.
