Well, neither do you, so your opinion here has as much weight as ours.
The difference being that my opinion is rarely "I know better than the folks who are successful at doing this." This place is full of armchair producers, writers, studio executives and public relations geniuses.

My opinion does "have as much weight" as yours - which is, exactly, none at all. If it were otherwise, we might all live where it's warm all year.

OH YEAH?

Well where might that be?

One month to go and I see all those old Khan rumours are back with a vengeance.

True or false, it doesn't hurt because it puts more bums on seats I suppose.

But is that really the case? Let's just consider whether it isn't for a moment. Then there'd be an awful lot of angry fans leaving preview screenings, their entitlement issues probably blinding them to whether it was a good film or not.

Apropos of nothing, can a person be an armchair stand-up comic?

If it isn't Khan? Loads! Simply because that's the way this game has been going - on and off with hints, supposed leaks and cast denials... Feels orchestrated. Whether those behind it all have gotten the online response they wanted, is anyone's guess. For every fan who expects Khan, they'll always be another who doesn't and wants a new creation, or different antagonist altogether reimagined.

The disgruntled will be a tiny percentage of the audience in any event.

Didn't folks say the same thing before Nemesis was released?

On the other hand, I think you're right about STID. Not that our opinion on such things has any weight.

We do? For certain?

Has their been an actual confirmation of this from someone actually involved in the production?
Yes, multiple times. In fact, here's the word from Orci earlier this week.

I sure thought so. It's a damn shame they didn't archive all those years of posts, because it sure would be fun to go back and see which folks made such a claim.

Probably the same folks who defended Enterprise to the bitter end.

Probably a lot of monosyllabic posts.

Probably.

Re: New Possible Spoiler for Harrison and One Other Possible Big Spoil

I posted this over on the "world premiere of into darkness in London" site, but then I was thinking that this would definitely cause some spoilers for people

How does JJ who is so secretive, premiere a movie in Germany on April 29th and not expect for the plot to be all over the internet?

So unless we go off radar, I imagine we will all have a "spoiler" for Harrison and pretty much everything else.

Sorry if this is not the correct place to put this, but I really do honestly believe that this is a game changer with identifying Harrison.

Funny, because what Orci says doesn't actually confirm that Harrison is working for Starfleet at all. What he actually says of Harrison "Well he understands Starfleet because he was enlisted in a similar way." and "He too has gone through the [Starfleet training] process to some degree". That doesn't actually confirm him as being enlisted by Starfleet, nor working for Starfleet, let alone as one of their "top agents". In fact, it makes it sound as though he was enlisted in a group other than, but similar to, Starfleet, which utilizes many of the same processes, protocols and procedures. Maybe even going through some training with Starfleet personnel, even though they aren't Starfleet personnel.

You know, in much the same way that various law enforcement agencies other than the FBI send personnel to the FBI training facility at Quantico to take select parts of the same training that Bureau agents get, even though they're not actually Bureau agents themselves. They too go "through the process to some degree", and I'd imagine many of them were enlisted into their various agencies in a way that was very similar to how FBI agents are enlisted.

Our local SWAT guys trained at Quantico, but most certainly don't work for the FBI or any other federal agency.

[Laughs]

I think I was one of the defenders of Enterprise, too.

On a lark, I decided to check out the Way Back Machine and pour over its archives from TrekBBS in 2002-2003, hoping to find evidence of some of that pre-release negativity.

Instead, I started browsing through the Trek Art threads, including old posts for the revised Daedalus that I'd been working on at that time. To my surprise, Dennis and I weren't just civil with each other back then, we were practically friendly. In the bitterness of my older years, I've somehow re-written my memories to think we've always been snarky towards each other. Between then and now, we'd been on opposite sides of arguments enough that things just kind of soured. Which is a shame because I continue to think of him as tremendously talented.

(Hey Dennis, whatever happened to SubspaceBBS?)

That stroll down memory lane distracted me from digging up the scandalous evidence I originally sought -- it just doesn't frigging matter. Let's say I found what I was looking for and some of it let me somehow nail him or someone else to the wall with irrefutable proof of duplicity. What do I get out of it -- fulfilment of some pathetic fantasy of ruining his day? I can't help but think that would prove worse things about me than him.

It's much better for me to accept that even people I admire can piss me off sometimes. And just because they aren't friends, that doesn't diminish their accomplishments. (And no, I'm not trying to be preachy, just sharing a bit of internal reflection.)

Have fun, folks! And thanks for the years of bickering and laughter we've all shared.
