Re: Hogan's Heroes, the movie

Unless Will Smith is Hogan this doesn't get made.

A cogent observation over at Deadline:

This film is being produced by two Geriatrics that are older than Merchant and Ivory!
The distance between these two geezers getting the rights to make a movie and finding the funding and a studio that gives a fuck is immense. When is Larson's new version of Battlestar Galactica being released, again?

In keeping with tradition Larry David for Klink

Anyway, Dave Sim had a brilliant analysis of Hogan's Heroes back in one of his Swords of Cerebus trade paperbacks. He interpreted the show as a satire of corporate bureaucarcy in the 60s. The main Germans on the show (Klink, Schulz and to a lesser extent Burkholder), were middle management guys. They didn't want to be there and didn't believe in the business. They were just terrified of being fired (sent to the Russian front). Major Hoffsteader was the outside consultant who occasionally showed up from the corporate HQ (Berlin) who could shake things up and get them fired. Basically, the Nazi uniforms were grey flannel suits.
Makes sense to me. Especially the way Klink sucks up to the boss, when ever high ranking members of the military or the party visits the camp.

Burkhalter
: "Fortunately, I have a plan."
Klink: "Brilliant plan, Herr General!"
Burkhalter: "...I haven't said what it is, yet."
Klink: "Oh, yes, of course, but it will be brilliant!"
Burkhalter: "Shut up, Klink."
Klink: "Yes, Herr General."

I figure, it was all a commentary on Hollywood right?

And I hereby withdraw Carrell in favor of Larry David as Klink. Brilliant suggestion!

If Greg Kinnear isn't cast is Hogan (and that may be too obvious after the Bob Crane movie) I would go with Joel McHale from community

Good choice. he can pull off the charming con-man vibe than Hogan needs.

I've often suspected Hogan might have been on the "wrong side of the law" before the war.

Obviously you don't watch Hogans Heroes for military accuracy. However, considering he was a Colonel, Hogan must have had a reasonably lengthy and successful military career be being captured. If he was on the wrong side of the law, I'd assume he was never caught.

^ Wikipedia says that Hogan was commander of the 504th Bomb Group, and graduated third in his class.

This!
Please see: McHale's Navy... God what a disaster...

Also, anything with Will Ferrel automatically makes it a Will Ferrel movie.. Klink needs to be happless and incompetent (Steve Carell DOES fit the roll), not over the top and loud (Will Ferrel)...

Greg Kinnear would be perfect for the role of Hogan, but I wonder if that would just be too weird, since He played Bob Crane in the bio-pic... In fact, I really don't wonder.. It would be too weird...

On edit: Joel McHale...Brilliant!!

No, I don't. Not for historical accuracy, either.

Hogan has a gift for running con games and is quite adept at stealing using misdirection. I doubt he learned these skills at the military academy.

Jimmy Stewart went from 2nd Lieutenant to full Colonel in about three years while serving in the USAAF in WWII.

Yes, and to my knowledge Jimmy Stewart never got caught on the wrong side of the law.

Re: Hogan's Heroes, the movie

I never said Hogan got caught. The Germans never really caught him while operating out of Stalag 13 and I doubt the Americans could either. I saw this quote about Hogan from a first season episode. "If you weren't one of their prisoners, you'd be one of ours".

The Stewart example shows you didn't have to be a lifer with a long time in the service to make Colonel in WWII.

Okay, I'll bite -- how does this go back in time and alter your childhood?

The same way JJ Abrams went back in time and erased everyone's Star Trek collections.
