I saw this post on trekmate.org

Burton who played Geordi in TNG says he is disappointed with the 09 film because it erased the TNG timeline. Burton also said it was a silly thing for JJ to do.

I don't think Burton watched any behind the scenes footage or any Interview of JJ ABRAMS speaking about the 09 film or even watched the film with JJ's commentary.

JJ did spend a good time respectfully ranting about how his trek is an alternate reality and everything that happened in the prime universe still exists and is unchangeable.

So that Includes the TNG timeline.......right?

I am certain that Burton is not been spiteful like William Shatner who is mad at JJ because JJ wont let him be part of new Trek.

However I do think Burton is plain wrong on this issue.


The Prime Universe is still out there.


Also it kind of sucks that Burton will say this things. TNG had so may time travel and alternate reality episodes so it makes no sense when he says JJ did a silly thing by creating a new timeline.

Just going to respond to the original post here. This is kind of silly. The TNG timeline and everything in the "prime universe" is still there. Nimoy's Spock came back a good few years after the end of Nemesis. The flick is an incredibly smart way to re-imagine it without negating everything that came before.

This is just silly.

If Paramount decided TNG was a viable aspect of the Star Trek franchise, they'd make a movie in a second and wouldn't blink an eye about alternate of alternate timeline space/time continuum rifts or whatnot.

TNG was great. I love it, but it had its time.

TNG was perfect as a seasonal episodic show. But is "too smart" for movies. And it's main characters were all a bit too old to fit in with that crowed of characters.

TOS is perfect as both. Plus on the Show and the Reboot it's characters are the perfect age for "action adventure" type stuff. I think of TOS well the movies for the most part to be Space Adventure Epic's where TNG is a Timly Space Journey Adventure.

TOS has the best stuff to make a movie. TNG has the best stuff to make a TV Show.

If that makes any sense.

Instead of looking around for that like button image, I'm just going to type the word LIKE.

We are on the bridge of the evil ship, Capt. Robau answers his captor's question with: "I am unfamiliar with Ambassador Spock." OK, while it may be true, it is unhelpful and an incredibly stupid response that we would not accept from a 19 year old intern answering phones for two-bit software firms in the year 2009, yet this dialogue is supposed to be coming from a ship captain? Did I mention this is not the skipper of a Pentaran mining shuttle? This command sits in the big chair for a top-of-the-line starship on a deep space exploration mission, in a future with what we hope is a passable education system. As might have been said in a performance review feedback for corrective action: "The correct response, Captain Robau, is to offer to assistance in finding the information or a resource that can provide an answer if there is one, or offer assistance in formulating options if there an answer is unavailable. Is that clear?"

For no reason, the Romulan then asks: "What is the current stardate?" which is beyond explanation.

...and of course the derp goes on and on. But my favorite bit out of all of it has always been the completely insane drive-by attack on "these are the voyages" right at the end:

As we cut to an external shot, old Spock reads "Space, the final frontier.* These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise, her ongoing mission, to explore strange new worlds, (Do we ignore the new worlds that aren't strange enough?), to seek out new life forms, (Is this a clarification to prevent us from seeking life without form?), and new civilizations, to boldly go where no one has gone before."

I think those people are missinterpreting / missremembering Kirks line in The Voyage Home. He says "I´m FROM Iowa, I only work in space"...not "I was born in Iowa".

Sadly in today's cinematic empire nobody wants a smart movie. They just want remakes of good movies and a continual dump of bad comedies with the occasional Gem of a good movie. but let's face it. since the 90's movies have been going into a steady decline.

Argo hits $200 million

That said, both films are very good as well as commercially successful.

I believe JJ makes very good commercially successful films as well. That's why Disney hired him to do wars as well.
