Carrie Fisher as an 'elderly' Princess Leia? Not so fast

Carrie Fisher is open to the idea of joining the cast of Disney's upcoming "Star Wars" films, but that doesn't mean it's a done deal.

While the actress told Palm Beach Illustrated that she's set to reprise her role of Princess Leia, it seems she was pulling someone's leg.

"She was joking," a rep for Fisher told CNN about the star's comment. "Nothing has been announced."

Yes, but all of those are NEW stories. Not continuations of stories we've already been told. Even a straight up reboot is better than a continuation.

I don't want to see a 40 year old Tobey Maguire swinging webs from the old folks home when Spider-Man is supposed to be a teenager/young adult.

I don't want to see William Shatner and Leonard Nemoy out saving the the galaxy while wearing the same diapers as Picard's grandfather.

As long as they recast James Bond every five movies or so (and they just killed off Judi Dench's M, so that's going to be new next time as well) that keeps his stories fresh.


Tell a story about the Rise of the New Jedi Order, or tell a story about how the Fall of the Empire gives way for some outside enemy that no one knew the Emperor was keeping at bay. But don't give me three movies about Luke, Han, and Leia playing Bridge with Chewbacca while sipping tea and reminiscing about their youth. Take a cue from Obi-Wan in ANH: He sacrifices himself so that the OT is about Luke, not some old dude who can't swing a saber anymore.

George Lucas tells them that Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford were pretty much signed on for Star Wars: Episode VII before the Disney deal was even made.

Asked whether members of the original Star Wars cast will appear in Episode VII and if he called them before the deal closed to keep them informed, Lucas says,

“We had already signed Mark and Carrie and Harrison—or we were pretty much in final stages of negotiation. So I called them to say, ‘Look, this is what’s going on.’ ” He pauses. “Maybe I’m not supposed to say that. I think they want to announce that with some big whoop-de-do, but we were negotiating with them.” Then he adds: “I won’t say whether the negotiations were successful or not.”

Naturally, of course, what some of us prefer to see in Episode VII and what Disney and Lucasfilm decide after much hard work to give us could be two very different things.

Me? I don't care so much how old the OT actors are so long as they get to do interesting things and the story is good.

I don't think anybody is claiming that this new series is going to be about Luke, Han, and Leia. Just because those characters are still alive doesn't mean the story is going to focus on them. If you have the opportunity to tell a new story AND bring back some beloved characters, I don't see why you wouldn't. The three of them were pretty instrumental in the fall of the Empire; it stands to reason they'd still be active in galactic politics.

Mark Hamill will be about 63, Ford will be about 73 and Fisher will be closing in on 57 by the time cameras roll on principal photography. As much as I revere their characters we have to face facts: they're not spry action heroes anymore. Harrison Ford barely made it through the last Indiana Jones film without looking like he needed to take a nap and rub on some Lanacane. Han, Luke and Leia will no doubt be leading and major characters in any storyline set 30 years after Jedi, but I sort of have my doubts that there are going to be many glitzy, frenetic action scenes for most of them.

All that doesn't matter if the writer finds a way to include them and believably account for their importance in the story besides spouting some analogy of "I'm to old for this shit" or some Jedi Master wisdom just because they're old compared to the spry, young action cast.

In fact i think Hollywood could use some more mixing of older actors with younger ones especially because there are so damn few young outstanding actors (i mentioned Jennifer Lawrence already which was no joke.. i think she's a brilliant actress despite her physical beauty.. it's the rare example of talent and good, marketable looks). For example a most recent example would be the movie Red where they take nearly exclusive old actors like Bruce Willis, Hellen Mirren and John Malkovich and turn them into a funny action bunch including their age.. it's a damn good and funny movie (and the sequel will be released later this year).

If they manage to do that with Star Wars i'll be one happy camper.

Oh.. and regarding this Carrie Fisher thing.. all three principal cast member are currently apparently only in an advisory role or something like that. They have been invited to meet with the main writer but have not signed contracts yet. What that means and if it's true is up to anyones guess.. if it's true and they get offered contracts to appear in the movies i doubt anyone will turn it down.. they are not exactly on food stamps (Ford certainly not, Hamill is doing ok with voice work and Fisher has/had a career as a writer) but i think they'll all welcome the chance to be in the spotlight again.

If the script holds up and doesn't turn out to be some stunt casting for the sake of it i'm all for it.
